Incase it might help,
I was back in England this weekend, I've needed to get my eyes tested for about 2yrs and had a spare hour so went into a local Vison Express. Normal service but whats very interesting is the group that they are owed by has shops in Switzerland, so after buying glasses and frames in England, they can transfer and deliver to Switzerland, and also assured me there wouldn't be any extra tax as they are just transfering between offices. I'm expecting the glasses early next week so I'll find out then whether its true, but its an absoulute bonus if so.
He also mentioned they send contact lenses over to someone else based over here every 3 months and they don't have any issues.
Maybe might save some people some cash!

I followed the advice from here and I went to fielmann yesterday. Indeed good prices and good service! Got glasss for my son and they offered me a free check...they told me I am good and should come back in two years
Funny...I paid only 30% more than what I paid in Romania...and the quality is better. Considering the income comparison I was really surprised to have a good deal on Bahnhofstrasse |

Just been back to the UK and got a new pair of glasses at Vision Express for GBP 121 (CHF185) - Just put the receipt through the health insurance here and Swica paid CHF167. Fantastic result.

I took a look in Visilab Zug yesterday and while they have some nice frames, most of the stuff I liked was priced around 600 - 700 CHF which I find to be quite expensive.

i paid once 900chf for the frame alone. with lenses it was 1500 and thats where i thought "is there a comp doing it cheaper with same quality?" and there was Fielmann.

i put off getting glasses (for computer and driving (mandatory)) because i thought it would be horribly expensive, (nice lady who i met walking dogs talked about 600+chf glasses (that she never wore outside incase she lost them) i have a 70 lb dog so she only has to sit on them a few times and thats it
- 25ch for eye test
- less than 50chf for each pair of glasses (including basic frames) they have perfectly acceptable frames for all face shapes.
- express service - i thought i needed the driving glasses quickly, and they came really quickly a few days.
- lovely lovely lovely lady who spoke english (eye tests use a different vocab imo) who did the eye test and advised questioned me on what to get.
- basic insurance for breakage loss theft included for 1yr? something like that
this was the oerlikon shop.

I also got my current pair at Fielmann. I have nothing but good things to say about them.
At the ZH Bahnhofstrasse store – which they tell me is the largest optician shop in Europe – they have a big selection, and I found the people to be extremely helpful. I got this young guy who bent over backwards to make sure I got the right frame (I have a strong prescription, so even with 600-franc ultra-high-index lenses, a lot of frames are functionally incompatible with my prescription). For example, he had Zeiss calculate the actual lens thicknesses as cut for a few candidate frames, so we'd know exactly what would work and what wouldn't. I'd recommend him, but sadly for us, he's moved back to Germany to do master optician training.
Indeed, Fielmann includes an accidental damage warranty for a few months or something, a multi-year warranty, and a money-back guarantee – you can return them for refund even if you just decide you don't like how they look. I imagine most opticians here would look at you crazy if you asked for that...

Another recommendation for Fielmann. And it's not just about price - IME better quality and technical competence, and much better service.
Back when I just needed single prescription lenses I was happy with the service from local opticians - so Fielmann was 'only' competing on price.
But now that I need variable lenses the local independent opticians I've gone to simply have been unable to come up with a prescription that allows me to see both near and far. Only Fielmann has been able to get it right.
When the local optician's prescription did not work I had no recourse - I was left with specs that I could not wear, that was money thrown out the window. Fielmann, on the other hand, guarantees that they will make it right.
My eyes are changing rapidly, I seem to need new specs every 6-9 months - so the huge savings that Fielmann offers comes in mighty handy.

after hunting around was torn between fielmann and visilab at hb. in the end settled for visilab, really helpful service, free eye test and a good sale on atm. bought a second pair with 40% off too.
