Re: Swiss coins

I read somewhere on here that there's something funny about 1987 5Fr coins and that they're engraved rather than embossed round the edge. I just found one in my pocket and I couldn't remember if those ones are still legal or not.

Re: Swiss coins

I don't know but the reason for the change is that it's more complicated to forge the embossed edge.

Hi all,
the change from silver to cupronickel coins had to do with the rising silver prices. The silver coins are still legal. This link will give you more detailed information.

I really wish I had not read this!! I found a rather pretty 1939 20rp and thought it would make a nice gift for my dad who was born that year. I showed it to my partner and left it on the side.

I went to the market, scooping up my change... and yes, the 20rp got in among them and now I have lost it:msnmad:

hmm...

If it is dated 1967 or earlier, then bingo, its real Ag. Not worth much, but worth collecting. Coin counting machines, which reject silver coins, are slowly weeding them out of circulation.

The exception is 1969 5chf coins, which can also be silver. For some reason after whacking out a ****load of copper-nickel "Fünflebers" in 1968 (common as dogturds), they went back to silver for one more year.

Just yesterday I was wondering why a parking meter would not accept my 0.50chf coin when it says it should. Looked at it and it was 1934.

Hi, well if you don't like the silver coins, please send them to me. I collect them! :-)

Re: Swiss coins

thanks for the post - my other half just went through all our 'washing day' 20 rappen pieces and found a 1939, two 1959's, a 1960 and a 1966.

I can see the difference - the silver ones have black tarnish...

The 1939 is in better condition than the rest...might put it aside as a Christmas present for someone..gee, it might be worth, oh - 1.50 chf!

Re: Swiss coins

It seems not... a good condition 20 rappen is worth around 10$ which is a good return!

You don't think it was the one I lost do you? :o

I have a 20rp from 1899 in really good condition and a whole load of 10rps from 1932 and 1939. Funny though that today I got my first 20rps from 2008! Very bright and shiny. I actually found a Reichsmark in a ticket machine, from 1934. Wonder who was trying to pay with that and whose pockets it has been in all these years..

After looking through my hange ever day for over a year now (and only a week left here), I finally found my first silver coin - a 1962 50 rappen.
OK, not earth-shattering news, but I'm happy. I also found a 1921 10 rappen in rather nice condition.

Lucky you - I found a silver 5rp piece from 1915 a few weeks ago. Probably worthless but I'll keep it for luck.

Time to resurrect an old question - what do you do to get rid of the 5rp coins which are completely useless?

My chums from work and I use them as poker chips when we're travelling by train. I also use them in the stamp machines. Otherwise, they only serve to stop inflation from spiralling. If they were dropped, as others have suggested, then all price increases would have to be in multiples of 10 rp, thus doubling any price increases.

Good tip there, I didn't know you can use them in stamp machines

I have a 1957 2rp coin. It is part of a Swiss souvenir pack of 'Viewmaster' stereo slides.

I'm saving mine up in an old tobacco pouch on the mantel. Some afternoon when I am more than usually annoyed with Swiss retail service, I shall go out and make large, unhurried rush-hour purchases with them.

Only 2 years out. The 1919 10rp is worth a lot more.

Re: Swiss coins
