In which of these sloppy ways would you go green in CH?

Reproduced from 'Planet Green':

10 "Gross" Ways to Go Green
A slob's guide to going green.

By Josh Peterson
Los Angeles, CA, USA | Wed May 13 11:30:00 EDT 2009

When I think of green citizenry, I think of people in immaculate houses with pristine solar panels who dust their pellet stoves with olive oil and a reusable cloth. Then I look around at my filthy, miserable apartment in crippling shame.

At some point during one of my shame spirals, I realized there were quite a few slobby ways that a person could go green and that you didn't have to own a "broom" to be eco-friendly. Here is a list of ten sloppy ways a person can go green.

1. Eat Over the Sink
If you hand wash dishes, then you may waste more water washing a cup than you drink from it. Save water by eating your sandwich, toaster waffle or chicken strips over the sink.

2. Drink Straight From the Package
This is basically the same deal as the last one. Recycle those milk bottles.

3. Bathe Less
Americans like to bathe a lot. We're bath crazy. Although you may not believe me, you don’t need to bathe everyday. A couple times a week is good enough to keep you healthy. (If you are very physically active or work in the sewers/morgue/infectious disease ward, you are probably an exception.)

4. If It's Yellow Let it Mellow
It takes about 3 gallons of water to flush a toilet. If you don't flush every time you pee, you'll save three gallons per pit stop.

5. Do Laundry Less
You can wear your clothes two or three times before you need to wash them. I wash my clothes when they start to itch. That's how I know they are ready.

6. Shave Less
Luckily for guys, the stubbly-loser look is in. Women, on the other hand, face an unfair social stigma for not shaving. If the guy isn't in to you cause you have some coarse leg hair, he probably wasn't marriage material anyways.

7. Don't Wear Make-Up
If you're a lady, I can understand the pressure to look nice. If you're going on a job interview, on a date or for a night out on the town, you should probably wear make-up as social custom tends to dictate. No one is saying ditch make-up all together. But if you're running to the post office, I think you can get through that transaction without make-up. As someone who frequents the post office, trust me when I say, "you will find little happiness or beauty at the post office."

8. Pee Outside
That's right. You can save three gallons of water by urinating on the earth we’re all trying to save.

9. Use a Handkerchief
You won't be wasting tissues, but you will be carrying a mucus-covered cloth in your pocket.

10. Stink
Perfumes, deodorants, aftershaves and colognes may contain harsh chemicals. They also have packaging waste. Letting yourself stink, as God and nature intended, can reduce chemicals and waste. If you see a decrease in friends, try an all-natural deodorant.

I can do Suggestions No. 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 10. As for putting on no makeup, I wouldn't want to scare the clerk at the post office with a too-clear view of my open pores, blemishes and shadows under the eyes.

Nice tips there. I do most of them anyway.

8 is sheer bliss and I make it a point to do it atleast once when I am outdoors.

I'll quite happily do 2, 3, 5, 6, 7(I'm a bloke so that's easy),10.

While I'm prepared to do 8, I don't think the green explanation is going to cut it with the arresting officer.

I used to abide the above mentioned rules painstakingly up until my better half took over and only then I became less green in whole meaning of this word

Apparently letting your garden develop the wild look is good for the environment as it encourages wildlife to settle. They don't like perfectly manicured lawns and pruned bushes.

But then you'd have to use so much water to wash your home-grown vegetables before making a salad.

I think I know where Migros got that last batch of Nusslisalat I had the misfortune to make a salad with...

Produce can be "washed" without water by performing item n°8 in your list.

Is 'garden' a euphemism for something, eh, Ms Grounder?

Either way it's going to be 'vironmentally friendly, innit? See No. 6.

Ok, if that is the interpretation I am afraid I must point out some inherent trade-offs. What you save on 6, you lose out by having to bathe more often, and perhaps buy disinfectants/deos, which again contain harmful chemicals, negating all the benefits it is all so deeply intertwined

You can choose instead that crystal stone deo - all natural, apparently. Some folk swear by it. I tried it once; not sure if it worked.

Re: In which of these sloppy ways would you go green in CH?

Another lazy way to be a bit greener is to chuck in any combo of colours (except whites) into the washing machine and add one of those colour catchers (two if you are putting crazy colours in together).

That way you always have a full load in the machine and the colours (almost ) never run.

And you don't have to be figged to go through the family's pongy washing doing a big colour sort-out before you do your washing.

Re no. 8:

Peeing outside will eventually destroy the plants and trees around, as they found out in Berlin during the World Cup 2006. 100'000 litres daily caused a great deal of irreparable damage to the vegeatation. And guess what, they had to use 6 million litres of water to save what they could.

Not very green - not even sloppily, IMO

Does it keep you dry as well? I hate that wet-under-the-arms feeling and look.
