Can I get the tip back on a kitchen knife?

A couple of the knives in my drawer have lost their pointy tip. I know that you can use a steel to sharpen non-serated knives but is there anything I can do to get the tip back - it is now impossible for me to cut tomatos!! and with my very limited kitchen skills this is a disater

They were a present and I am hoping there is a more cost efficient way than buying new.

Thanks for your suggestions.

You're suppose to cut tomatoes with a serrated edge knife. Anything that's tough on the outside but soft on the inside is best cut with serrated edge.

Thanks for the "tip" I know very cheesy - sorry! So now I can still cut my tomatos with the serrated knife but I still have the other knives without tips. Should I get rid of them - if so, how do I recycle them?

Re: Can I get the tip back on a kitchen knife?

I may be wrong here, but I never use the tip when cutting anything, and I only have one knife that I use for everything.

Just buy one decent quality 9" or so chef's knife and sharpen it for a few seconds each time you use it and it will be perfect. If you are cutting tomatoes you will only have injuries with the knife slipping if it is NOT sharp.

If you buy a top end knife ( for instance by Global ) then it is a real pain in the behind to look after it, making sure the edge is properly looked after. I don't have the patience and find something cheaper that needs more regular, but less lengthy, sharpening works just as well.

Hope it helps, but only my opinion.

Put a decent edge on them and they will cut tomatoes easily - tip or no tip. They don't need a tip on them unless you are intending to stab somebody with them.

Don't know about recycling them, but for sharp knives, avoid using a dishwasher. It'll blunten them. Just handwash them...

Re: Can I get the tip back on a kitchen knife?

If you are not comfortable sharpening your knives yourself, there is a sharpening service that travels around:

http://www.schleifservice.ch/Schleif...Hauptseite.htm

See the Fahrplan for a schedule of when they will be in your area. I've not used them for kitchen knives but have for scissors, and have been happy. Posters will go up around town a few weeks before they are scheduled to arrive.

Elsner Messerschmied in Rapperswil also does sharpening, and they do a beautiful job.
