Re: What do Asians miss in Switzerland?

I don't really miss anything? IN fact I think my country should be more like Switzerland than just claim to want to be like Switzerland.

I just miss the familiarity of homeground, but its not specific to me being asian.

Re: What do Asians miss in Switzerland?

Not so much to do with missing Asia as much as missing the ability to be easy-going when socializing. Don't get me wrong. I love the punctuality of the trains, how everything works (for the most part) like clockwork. However, people seem to carry that into their personal relationships and makes social interaction feels at times like I'm dealing with a machine rather than humans.

People often seem to have a higher level of mental stress though for the life of me, I can't figure out why. Many women, mothers especially, seem so stressed even though they don't even have a wage earning job to rush off to. Yes, child raising is difficult but mothers around the world do both and still seemed far more relaxed than the mothers I see here.

Perhaps it's the perfectionism that's been drummed into Swiss school children that they turn out so stressed. Especially when out-of-the-box things happen. Some have lived in the box for so long, they freak out when the box isn't there!

Fortunately (or not) depending on your perspective, the younger generation seems rather more relaxed. But then, they've had it good.

Oh yes I also miss the family support system..When your kid is sick here then u can't call you mother or sister to take care of them because you have to rush to the office...

Every weekend you cannot go to your parents house for a great breakfast of Halwa puri or parathaas..

I miss fresh samosaas and naan

Re: What do Asians miss in Switzerland?

I think the local Cultures & Habits are also driven by Technology.

For example in my home country the train and buses dont run on time, so nobody expects you to be punctual.

Before the Mobile Phones, Absence without Leave, or letting people know before you arrive or notifying if you're late was normal, but now its considered bad manners and lack of consideration.

Before microwaves one haad patience to cook or heat their food on a stove, but now 30 seconds in a microwave seem like a long time and makes us impatient.

During my stay in London, I discussed such things with a couple of local guys in their 60s and 70s and was surprised to know that, while growing up their way of living was also very much the same as what we call "Asian" now... i.e. dropping into friends house uninvited and and more sense of community rather than the Individualism now.

One of the guys who got married when he was 19, and also wedded his children in early 20s ... every Christmas he makes sure all his children, grand children and great children get together for a big Family Christmas.. and the remark that shocked me most was that he couldnt understand how come girls could walk around late at night wearing short skirts and flimsy clothes, dont they have anyone in their family questioning them?!

That was a very "Tribal" remark coming from an Old Scotsman!

Hahahaha... YES!!!

Though when we got caught, me and my friends, guy who was driving didnt have any papers for the car or driving licence either so we were taken to the Police Station and then haggled there and the Inspector said "I dont take Bribes, you gonna bribe me now and then go out and tell everyone that the Police is corrupt" ..

What he meant was dont give it in my hand, just stuff it in my side pocket discreetly, and promise not to tell anyone...

Re: What do Asians miss in Switzerland?

As a westerner who spent some of the happiest years of my life in China...

... I miss the 'kindness of strangers'.

Just a few examples:

My Chinese vocabulary was pretty awful, and my accent even worse, but my poor efforts always elicited encouraging comments and spontaneous offers of help. I never felt foolish, even when making elementary mistakes, because people were so very accepting. I've been in Switzerland 10 years now, and still fear the disapproving looks I know I'll get when I stumble over a German adjective declension.

One day, having lost my way, I haltingly asked a lady for directions. Not only did she point me in the right direction, she insisted on accompanying me until we found the address I was looking for - and I'm sure she went far out of her way to help me.

At a teahouse, restaurant, sitting in the park someone would invariably strike up a conversation - I never felt invisible, as I often did when I first moved to Switzerland. A few pleasant words makes all the difference.

I could go on and on.

I miss those chance encounters.

I love many things about Switzerland, please don't get me wrong. But I do miss the warmth, acceptance and kindness that I found so readily in China.

Re: What do Asians miss in Switzerland?

While I do not ethnically qualify as "Asian", I have spent quite some time in there. Other than food, I miss:
- open shops at evening and weekends
- large urban environments with their wide variety of facilities
- cheap high-tech gadgets and electronic appliances
- women in kimono
- occasional encounters with sumo wrestlers on the street or in the underground
- flamboyant summer fireworks
- cultural events
- the total absence of church bells

Yes.. in even non-Asian cities to some extent, its just how you define it or structure it. Things are pretty much same all around the world, its just about the level of sophistication.

In developing countries Police is not paid well and the "Bribes" form the "unwritten" part of your 'Pay Package" ... In developed countires Police enjoy good salary and benefits hence is less inclined to unlawful means.

Like in London, the Parking Wardens get a percentage of all the tickets they issue AND they issue a lot, rightfully or wrongly, just to get their commission!

Call it Bribe or Comission, same thing, only difference is atleast in our countries we can bargain it or even tell a good story and escape it

Another thing is the population, its easier to manage say 5 million than 150 million!

1 crime in 5 million is same as 30 crimes in 150 million, in percentage terms.

Also lot of "Asian" countries are New or Young nations, roughly "chopped up" post Second World War... their National histories dont go back more than 60 years or so, and hence still struggling with National identity and Pride.

Did you get squashed by the sumo wrestlers or did they merely hug you?

The church bell item made me chortle.

Re: What do Asians miss in Switzerland?

I really miss the tropical fruits and vegetables. The worst thing in Switzerland that in a hot summer day, you go to supermarket and don't know what to buy for your dinner. Boring fruits and vegetables. And in Asia shops, they're limited but too too expensive.

I miss the beach in Vietnam.

I miss my motorcycle.

I miss everything....

Both are not mutually exclusive. Fortunately the encounters only involved minor league wrestlers. Yokozunas rarely mingle with the hoi polloi.

I was so amused by the "! F@ck! F&ck!" at the beginning in Cantonese.

The expletive is an international expression whatever the language.

I was once stopped for making an illegal right turn in Kuala Lumpur. Didn't offer a bribe and wasn't asked for one. The cop let me off. Guess the god of right turns was smiling kindly on me.

Those days when I had my paper license, I'd slip in a red RM10 note as an "insurance" against the threat of a ( malicious ) prosecution. Nowadays, the rates are much higher.

Re: What do Asians miss in Switzerland?

I miss working with a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic bunch of people.
Malays, Indians, Chinese, Sikhs, Ceylonese and Eurasians - there was a lot of sharing and bantering. All the religious festivities, accompanying goodies/food, befuddling or remarkable customs and colour. The Eurasians brought the 'magic of Christmas' to those of us not brought up in Christian families. The Chinese of different dialects spoke to each other in Malay or English.

Also miss the 11 or 12 public holidays a year in Malaysia.

Re: What do Asians miss in Switzerland?

umm Argus...just pointing out that Punjabis and Sikhs are different.... Punjabis in India fall within the larger Hindu religion...Punjabis from Pakistan follow Islam)

Sikhs of course follow the Sikh religion which was propagated by Guru Gobind Singh.

The largest proportion of Punjabis and Sikhs are resident in India.
