umm Argus...just pointing out that Punjabis and Sikhs are different.... Punjabis in India fall within the larger Hindu religion...Punjabis from Pakistan follow Islam)

Sikhs of course follow the Sikh religion which was propagated by Guru Gobind Singh.

The largest proportion of Punjabis and Sikhs are resident in India.

I'm aware of the geographical and religious differences. But thank you.
Most of those who called themselves Punjabis in Malaysia where I was growing up were Sikhs though.

Same here Argus - I know the feeling. I once worked in Tanah Tumpah Darah ( aka Malaysia ) for a US company which hired a locals and those from abroad - I thoroughly enjoyed the harmony and cultural diversity.

Re: What do Asians miss in Switzerland?

Speaking as someone who has been born and brought up in India (Bombay),
  • Food, food and more food. The sheer variety of cuisines in India is staggering to say the least. Mindboggling to the taste buds.
  • Being able to shop daily till 9 pm and on weekends till 11 pm (both Saturday and Sunday)
  • The warmth of people which is kinda infectious
  • Seeing a new Bollywood movie every week on a Friday
  • Mom, Dad, Family and Friends. To be honest, if you can take them with you anywhere in the world, I dont think you would really miss anything about your home country
  • Having said that, I was traveling this weekend on India's Independence Day (15th August) and accidentally chanced upon a rendition of the Indian National Anthem. Sheesh, I had a lump in my throat at the end....
Now before I get sentimental, let me get outta here.

Re: What do Asians miss in Switzerland?

Technology can hardly make the qualitative difference between a place like Germany which is by Swiss standards far more outgoing than the folks around here. It's more likely Swiss cows.

I think the local Cultures & Habits are also driven by Technology.

For example in my home country the train and buses dont run on time, so nobody expects you to be punctual.

Before the Mobile Phones, Absence without Leave, or letting people know before you arrive or notifying if you're late was normal, but now its considered bad manners and lack of consideration.

Before microwaves one haad patience to cook or heat their food on a stove, but now 30 seconds in a microwave seem like a long time and makes us impatient.

During my stay in London, I discussed such things with a couple of local guys in their 60s and 70s and was surprised to know that, while growing up their way of living was also very much the same as what we call "Asian" now... i.e. dropping into friends house uninvited and and more sense of community rather than the Individualism now.

One of the guys who got married when he was 19, and also wedded his children in early 20s ... every Christmas he makes sure all his children, grand children and great children get together for a big Family Christmas.. and the remark that shocked me most was that he couldnt understand how come girls could walk around late at night wearing short skirts and flimsy clothes, dont they have anyone in their family questioning them?!

That was a very "Tribal" remark coming from an Old Scotsman!

Just to add for Mumbai-
  • I miss mumbai overcrowded trains. When I sit alone in the "almost" empty trams/trains or buses here, first thing that comes to my mind is travelling in crowded Mumbai trains with half of your body outside the train....be it first class. with all troubles, there was fun
  • Monsoons, you never know when you would get caught in pot hole, you always had to be cautious.
  • Best part of Mumbai is be it "crore-pati "or "road-pati" , all can find their own place
  • pani puris or gol gappas ..

I really miss the tropical fruits and vegetables. The worst thing in Switzerland that in a hot summer day, you go to supermarket and don't know what to buy for your dinner. Boring fruits and vegetables. And in Asia shops, they're limited but too too expensive.

I miss the beach in Vietnam.

I miss my motorcycle.

I miss everything....
Nothing about the fruits and vegetables. But a mild suggestion. Make short term city trips to Paris, where Vietnamese fruit and vegetables are around, not least in shops of the Vietnamese community which in France is quite numerous anyway.

Beaches ? make weekend trips to the beaches on the Mediterranean. The beaches on the Mediterranean and the "hinterlands" of course are not Vietnam but at least are real beaches on the seaside

Motorcycle ? Contact some shops who offer motorcycles or check up on www.ricardo.ch or www.ebay.ch for a nice used one !

Thanks for your tips. We tried them all but to be honest we are in Europe and we are not looking for real Vietnamese stuffs here. Why don't we enjoy Swiss things?

Just the title of the topic that "what do asian miss in Switzerland?". I just misssssss Vietnam.

Re: What do Asians miss in Switzerland?

I miss being invited to a party at 8 pm, reaching there at 10, being the first one to arrive, and still catching the host off-guard with my display of 'punctuality'...

But the best part is the conversations, liquid deliverance & gastronomic delights which follow ...
