Are expats arrogant barstewards?

I think they are without even realizing it.

DB I love the pic! Now back to topic. I guess everyone has the potential to bea sucky customer. Language and cultural barriers just make it easier for a misunderstanding to occur.

Adieu!

Exactly but what when the misunderstandings are gathered together and seem to gang up in opinion against the new country?

Re: Are expats arrogant barstewards?

i think expats have the privilege of only remembering the good things about their own country.. then they visit it again, and the wise ones see that there are just as many annoying things there, else they wouldn't have left it in the first place..

They seem to be sort of tolerable here - nothing compared to the shower of wan kers you tend to find in places like Dubai, SE Asia & Spain.

Basteward complains that nothing is the same as back home, everything is expensive, too small and out of date. The women are ugly, everyone talks funny and the food is always going off and squashy.

Rabbi and Swiss guy order a drink.

Re: Are expats arrogant barstewards?

Seriously...I think you brit expats have it easy. Try hosting American tourists...

Suddenly you are confronted with friends and family that you love suddenly embodying this appalling US cultural ignorance..

Too recently I have hosted American visitors only to be regaled by the results of their exhaustive study of European and Swiss culture and habits. The particularly socially adept add a "why is it that all Swiss..." in front of their observations in a shrewd attempt to disguise their rant as a question.

I have yet to figure out a way to preemptively stop this or even short circuit these conversations when they happen. Of course, these visitors also believe they are safe making these observations loudly in public places since English is an obscure ancient tribal language with no chance anyone outside of a few university anthropologists could even hope to understand.

Any tips on how to shut down conversations like this or handle observations like "it is so hard to read the Swedish on the signs in Zurich" gracefully?

Sometimes being one is a person's defense mechanism to cope with a foreign place and sometimes xenophobic behaviour.

Re: Are expats arrogant barstewards?

Only those who think their mother tongue should be understood by all shop assistants and service providers here.
Only those who ask why can't they find their (insert brandname) favourite product here and condemn the local stuff before they even try them.
Worse still, those who assume they can't find a certain ingredient in this country when they haven't even looked in two stores.
And, finally, those who say, "I refuse to learn!"

As for the poster who has to deal with abrasive American tourists in his/her house, tell them one thing: "Just listen to yourselves talking..." or "An intelligent person understands that things would be quite different here as the histories of both countries are entirely different." (Verb, methinks there's a point beyond 'gracious' that they have taken you, so you don't really need to be that tactful.)

Re: Are expats arrogant barstewards?

I think its part of human nature. Deep down there is a small fragement of fear of the unknown in everyone. Some more pronounced than others... When faced with all the differences that being in a new country brings, the need to feel superior could stem from the need to reassure oneself of ones own identity...
