Hi Verbier,

Thanks for the link! Where did you find it? I subscribe to their newsletter and thoroughly scoured the most recent one before buying a book LAST NIGHT but did not see any discounts. Grrrr. Wish I was more patient before placing my order, but I think I'll buy more books with this discount tonight! I would realllly appreciate it if you could let me know where I can find/receive discount links... Thanks!!
I got the coupon link in my mail today. There should be someplace on the site to sign up (or it comes automatically with the fact that you are a customer). Not sure if you need to select someplace in your account details to request emails from them?

Check the email account you use with them and you should have received something.

Re: Where to order English books online

The Book Depository also sends books individually, which is why i started buying from them instead of Amazon, although with Amazon you might pay less overall if you order 3-4 books (but then you risk customs duties and checking fee!)

Play.com is great too and they have a tonne of DVDs and computer games Their books are also well priced but so far I've always found them cheaper on Amazon or Book Depository.

Anyway, I'm just grateful I dont have to buy books at Orell Fuesli!!!! I was there today just to browse and was shocked at the prices. And some people were requesting for books which were going to take weeks to arrive and are overpriced too! Shame they don't know bout online shopping

Btw Verbier somehow i did not get the newsletter. I registered myself again to see if there are different newsletters.... Thanks for letting us know!

Re: Where to order English books online

I normally look at both Play.com and The Book Depository. I find however that BD normally has a better selection than Play does. Especially with the larger format "UK Airports Edition" paperbacks that are almost the same size as a hardcover book.

So far, I have only placed orders with BD and as mentioned I have been very happy.

I agree with you, the price for books (all languages) in CH is unreal. I have also seen people placing orders at a local book shop and being told that it will take weeks to receive the book. I feel like jumping in but haven't so far.

Happy reading.

i got an ebook reader and love it. it's smaller and lighter than a normal book so very portable. great for train journeys. best of all, you get free ebook downloads from the internet!

i've probably saved the purchase cost in books already!

I don't mind because the books are free-range and hormone-free. Oh.. wait...

For online purchases, amazon.de has been great -- no taxes, no shipping charges, decent shipping time. I just bought a sample with bookdepository.co.uk and we'll see how long long the shipping takes, the prices seem very good, though.

Have you seen this? I spotted myself and it creeps me out.

I agree, I much prefer Amazon.de - the delivery has always been so amazingly quick. It usually takes no more than 48 hours, there are no deliveries fees, there are vat free, and I always find what I am looking for.

A part from that, I just find that Amazon interface is so easy and informative at the same time, you have the "look inside" option, there are always useful feedbacks, and so on.. can't find any better service around.

But I am not sure is "free-range and hormone-free"
surely amazon.co.uk is not "royal mail friendly"..

Hello,

I have been using Amazon for ordering English books, but recently have been hit with a CHF20 customs/Poste surcharge when they are delivered. As Amazon have been less then helpful in letting me know why this change has occured (I used to get the deliveries with no surcharge), I'm now looking for a new online store I can use - most of the books I order are quite specialist business books, and so not available at smaller stores.

Does anyone have a recommendation of a good Internet book retailer with a Swiss distribution arm so I can avoid the customs/Poste surcharge? Or any other ideas?

Thanks

Patrious
How about getting a Kindle? Your books will arrive via the 3G phone network, immediately, with no delivery costs.

Re: Where to order English books online

Following the positive comments about The Book Depository, I placed an email order with them on 16th December. The book was despatched on 21st December, and was delivered this morning 9th January! Whilst I appreciate that one can expect postal delays during Christmas/New Year, I consider that this company's delivery service leaves a lot to be desired, which sentiments I have passed on to the company!

I have always been happy with the service and delivery of The Book Depository. I use them and Amazon.co.uk for book purchases - as I often finid Amazon has a better choice, particular for non fiction..

Wow. That does leave a lot to be desired. I have waited up to 3 weeks for a book from them, but I also ordered something right at Christmas and received it before New years, this year. Seems to be some randomness in it all.

At the busiest time of the year they took at least 4 days to dispatch your order. The rest of the delay was not their responsibility, and with free postage they are not going to pay for the fastest tariff. I don't see any reason to complain.

Re: Where to order English books online

Also vote for bookdepository. Free delivery and ctan said books come seperate. Once I placed two orders as I forgot to order few books after placing two order Itold them they could deliver it in one package. But they said it doesn't actually matter to them as it shipped by several sellers.

And I can also recommend Amazon.de, not only free delivery but also vat is not charged. No vat lol it makes even cheaper.

May I suggest you read the "About Us" section on The Book Depository website, wherein they state not once, but twice, that books are available for despatch within 48 hours - mine took five days! They also state "we have a reputation for extremely high service levels" - regrettably, this did not apply to my order. As far as transporting the book is concerned, The Book Depository has an obligation to its clients to ensure that reputable carriers are used in order that orders arrive at their destination within a reasonable time limit. Thus, in view of the foregoing and the fact that my order took almost a month to arrive, I feel I have every reason to complain!

Re: Where to order English books online

I used www.abebooks.com
In my case, it was cheaper than amazon and they do have specials offers from time to time when they ship to Switzerland free of charge.

Re: Where to order English books online

Amazon.de is al I have used so far, not just for books but also for small household items as well. I've been happy with the fast delivery and have had no delivery charges for books (I paid a couple of Euro's to deliver a citrus press).

Thanks for posting other options though, it's great to have websites to compare.

Re: Where to order English books online

I normally order either through www.storyworld.ch or www.exlibris.ch depending on which company offers the book cheaper. Both are Swiss retailers and you can pay via pink slip (handy since we dont have a credit card ) Books arrive within 2-7 days.

I completely agree with the pro-Kindle posters here. It's a fantastic little device, really easy to read, easy to get new books, you can carry loads at any one time - and you don't have to pay through the nose and wait for ages every time you want a new book! All are cheap, some are free. I love mine and I don't know a single person who's got one and gone back to reading ordinary books.

I use the free kindle app on an ipad2 and find it very good, especially now that it reads docs, pdfs etc as well as books.

I did read an article last week about the price of Amazon ebooks going up and in some cases are more expensive than the paperback version, which is concerning.

Do remember that the e-ink screen is easier to read, especially for long periods, in the sun, etc.

Yes, considering the manufacturing and distribution costs the books can be unreasonable. But so many are free or cheap I think it's still a good deal it (especially living in Switzerland!!).
