Re: Where to order English books online

I also need to buy books + CDs for my playgroups in English and it would be easy to purchase from Amazon but the choice is limited when it comes to cds with nursery rhymes and ESL teaching. I need materials for preschool teaching or ESL (English as a second language) with good quality songs for my preschoolers (playgroups). I don't know what would be the best option for me to order them since I am in Switzerland. I'm sure there are English teachers on EF so maybe someone could give me advice on that one?

Please let me know if you can think of any bookstore in Zurich or on-line shop with plenty of choices for children/teachers.

Re: Where to order English books online

Hi, I haven't searched the thread, but in case nobody posted - here is a great website for books:

www.bookdepository.co.uk

They have a bit lower prices than Amazon and delivery to Switzerland is free of charge

Hi,

I live in Thurgau. If I make a 25 fr order of two books should I be afraid of paying taxes? Thank you

Re: Where to order English books online

I've recently made 2 orders via Orellfuessli a week apart.

On ordering ,the maximum quoted delivery time was 2 weeks. Now it appears not one of the six books ordered will arrive within 28 days of ordering. This has been a very disappointing experience so far and as much as I prefer to support Swiss businesses, if they cannot get the customer experience right I'm walking away.

Kind Regards,
Ian

Re: Where to order English books online

I placed an order at St.Annahof branch of Orell Füssli in June and was advised it would take up to 15 days for delivery. My order arrived within 10 days and I had excellent customer service.

Is your order for home postal delivery? If so, I've found the recent changes to the Swiss parcel delivery system for imported goods to be an absolute pain and everything takes several days longer to arrive than it did a year ago because it goes via Daillens.

Yes correct, it is for home postal delivery. However Orellfuessli is a Swiss-based firm..are you saying they are shipping from an OS warehouse directly to me? If so they need to account for known issues in their estimations if they don't want to p*ss customers off.

I can't answer for them, but I know that my order came from their English books supplier in the UK, so that supplier might well be shipping the order directly to you. I don't know. What I do know is that the issue with parcels from outside Switzerland is pretty recent, as shown in the thread linked. You could always phone them to ask why your order is delayed.

Re: Where to order English books online

I ordered from them last year (so before the post system changed) simply to use up remaining credit I had with them. I selected five items and all of them had very short (immediate) delivery times or estimates of 10 to 14 days.
I received my order in two separate consignments. Two things came immediately. The other three though took over five weeks to arrive. I wasn't impressed.

Re: Where to order English books online

Just as an experiment, perhaps someone on the forum is due to make a book order and would care to order half from Orell Fussli and half from Waterstones in the UK https://www.waterstones.com/ and would also be so kind as to report back on advertised delivery times vs. actual delivery times. Waterstones advertise delivery to Switzerland in 7-10 days for £9, but that's dependent on the books being in stock. The rest is in the hands of the publishers and Swiss postal service I guess.

Re: Where to order English books online

I get almost all my books from abebooks. They are almost all secondhand, but there are so many books that I want to read that I can wait until they turn up cheap. Some are a bit tatty, but does it really matter? The words are all there .

The problem there is the high delivery charge. Alright the pound is low against the franc and as such the UK is currently quite inexpensive for many things, but I definitely would not pay £9 for delivery, especially not for books. A lot of books are sent at the large letter rate and there other sites which don't charge for postage, or if they do the fee is small.

If you want to avoid supporting Amazon, which bought ABE books some years ago, there is http://www.biblio.com, it's an umbrella site like ABE for booksellers, but it's much nicer and it's independent.

Alas, if you are an Amazon avoider, also taken over by Amazon a few years ago. That said, with the free shipping, it's a good reliable service.

Biblio.com is predominantly for second-hand.

Maybe there are more English speakers in Geneva than elsewhere, but although there are no new English bookshops here anymore, there is an openair bookmarket on Confederation which has a couple of stalls that specialise in English language books. That is open Tuesday and Friday. And there is the English Library's sale twice a year.

Also Payot for standard stuff.

I love abebooks. Vintage cookbooks and other stuff, usually in remarkable condition.

I‘ve become a huge fan of audiobooks. My audible (another amazon product) subscription, which i‘ve had for years costs about chf 9/book. The only thing I don‘t like is that, much like Kindle, you can;t easily share or pass on books.

Thank you!

I was able to place an order using biblio.com and even donate to a charity after having online hassles from both Amazon and Orell Füssli.

So pleased to hear that. It's a nice clean interface too.
