They say the Swiss don't have a sense of humour.
I don't find that funny.

I think we do have a sense of humour, it's just not very sophisticated.

Put in a broad statement, they can't laugh at themselves. They can laugh at the Austrians and everyone else though.

I was born without humour regardless of whether being Swiss or not and I'm fully aware of it. So yes, case closed.

I live in a certified small farming village in Central Switzerland. I'm surrounded by Eidgenossen with all their positives and negatives. I listen to their jokes, which have all been used again and again.
Only a handful can laugh at themselves. For the rest, it's a sign of weakness.

olygirl: The 3 nationalities jokes are typically somewhat favourable for your own country... but that doesn't really indicate if we make fun of ourselves.. watch any lame Swiss comedy show to confirm that.
Or Emil ofc. |

Watch some Swiss movies on DVD such as 'Herbst Zeit' (something-something), 'The Swiss Maker' and 'Trouble in Havana' (or something like that; sorry, the titles escape me now - someone, please help! Nathu?) and you will witness the gentle and ticklish Swiss sense of humour and the ready ability to laugh at themselves.
(Sorry. I haven't had enough coffeee this morning.)

Or Emil ofc. | | | | | Yes, a handful of Swiss can laugh at themselves. And most comedy shows are VERY lame. I know Emil can laugh at himself but that doesn't prove that the majority of Swiss can.
The Swiss logo is: Admitting any personal weakness is a sign of weakness.

I've found that unlike the British humour, swiss humour doesn't need to be offensive or rudely sarcastic.
I feel the most swiss deep down would probably have a bad feeling later if they thought they had upset someone in such a way.
Emil is cool and yes very light hearted. His books make a great read.

Emil is/was immensely popular in Switzerland, and all he did was portray a rather realistic picture of Swiss characters. |

Emil did this over 20 years ago. Walter Roderer did it too.
But can you do it? Can your neighbours do it? Honestly, I doubt it.

Laugh at myself ? I do it constantly, and it's almost a sport among friends. You might argue we're not typically Swiss, but everyone I know of can make some (light hearted, admittedly) fun of themselves. | Quote: | | | | The Swiss logo is: Admitting any personal weakness is a sign of weakness. | | | | | That sounds very un-Swiss to me.

case closed | | | | | Very true superted. Of course most of the Swiss on EF understand English and therefore they would understand a lot of British, American, Aussie etc humour, so maybe some of the Swiss on here and a few others, aren't truly representative of the nation. Besides, I heard a rumour which I couldn't possible confirm and that was, that s*m*n_ch's (name disguised to protect the innocent) dad was an English milkman, visiting a dairy farm that s*m*n's mum was working at as a dairy maid. | The following 2 users would like to thank Brightonite for this useful post: | |

Well Swiss Simon, I guess we'll just have to meet up someday and have a laugh over a Cafe Zwetchgen.
