Swiss Air Force taking the jets for a spin...(photos)

Hey there

I had the chance to attend one of the most amazing military demonstrations that took place on top of a 7500 foot mountain in the heart of switzerland. Words can't do what pictures will show, so kick back and take yourself on a little trip to the swiss alps...

These photos just make my little aerospace engineering heart flutter with glee. Military demonstrations are always such a thrill, for the pilots and the spectators. I'm honestly somewhat jealous of you, since you could see these in person....

I may be wrong but that plane is firing it's cannons, and that black streak in front of the plane is a bullet right?

Awesome pics Tom

Re: Swiss Air Force taking the jet's for a spin...(photos)

Hey guy's! Thanks for the feedback, I must admit that, I seen air shows and demo's ever since my mind started remembering lol and before Axalp I thought the South Africans had the best shows but this right here blew my mind! At some point the jets flew right over the edge of the mountain where we stood on so that the natural reaction of a jet flying sooo low over you was HIT THE GROUND Keep in mind that it's a 3 hour hike with a altitude change from 1550 meters up to 2250 meters, we started walking at 2 am so we could be on top for the sunrise and see the jet's all day training and showing off.

@slaphead

yess baby! you see the bullet and the cloud coming from the on board gun. Keep in mind that the jet was doing something around 250 up to 400 knots and from the point of firing the bullet it takes 1.4 seconds to impact, so it's rather a lucky shot from my side then it is from his

As mentioned there are more pictures on my homepage I linked in the first post ...

Next Axalp will be next year and it's always either on a Wednesday or Thursday.

As a former officer of the Swiss Army, I saw many Air Force demos, including Axalp (in the mid 'seventies), and I shot many photos myself, some of them fairly good ones. I know the difficulties first hand. Your pictures, however, are just the very best I've ever seen. Especially the one with the visible bullet is downright stunning. Congrats!

These are incredible photos. A couple of years ago I saw the Swiss Airforce display team at the airshow in Bex which also featured Britain's Red Arrows and the French air display team. The Patrouille Suisse was the best out of the three which says something. The red underbellies with the white cross is very evocative. Thanks for sharing. How can you find out the date for next year? I looked up this site. They don't publish the date yet but there'ssome useful info

All I can say is "wow"... simply amazing photos, no-one could of taken better. I can't believe you managed to capture the bullet in that shot, talk about blind luck. It would be great if you could put numbers in the line above the pics when you post them so we can say "Oh number 12 is great" etc etc. I honestly can't choose a favourite, there are too many awesome pics to choose from...

Re: Swiss Air Force taking the jets for a spin...(photos)

Yo slaphead, It really is more luck then anything else to be honest. Holding the 400 mm 2.8 lens with it's 6kg weight, plus the 1.4x converter making it a 560mm 4.0 lens and the 1D Mark III body on it, keeps u busy enough to just aim at the jet and fire right back at him hoping with 11 pictures per second to catch the bullet Or else call me Chuck Norris lol

and this one here is cuz I can't get enough and I hope y'all don't mind

Be careful searching for that on-line though... I have a feeling there are some weird photos that would definitely be NSFW.

If you actually do like looking at planes, because why not, they're awesome, look at http://www.airliners.net/ They're photos are amazing quality and amazingly diverse. These would definitely fit right in.
