Sometimes I do wonder if people do actually think about things before pressing the submit button... comparing two completely countries with completely difficult economies? Very odd.

i did because i think the language provided isnt the major point that a country makes good business. and germany is a good example as we are compared to CH in the same trap of not speaking any good anglish and only a low %age of people does speak buis-vocab/level. a coop homepage in german wont keep the brightest n smartest people from coming. and a fon contract in english provided wont either. and the argument "us job nomads dont stay for long so no need to learn german" is the cherry topping why it wont be changed and i think it shouldnt be.

Right, some say "learn the language!", others say "wouldn't it be nice if..?"

Is there much more to discuss?

Do those who (reasonably) suggest "learn the language" oppose Coop using English on their site? It's only a modest internet initiative; nobody's asking for a change in the fabric of society.

Or have I missed the point somewhere?

Im sorry people seem to be straying a bit from the main topic here...

The question was in providing an English translataion for a popular supermarket to cater for a significant proportion of English-speaking people in a country populated by a LOT of native English-speaking people.

So many of you are giving an opinion based nothing whatsoever of the practicality of such a thing, just going with your principles on that you think there shouldn't be a translation, as though it's going to cause the unravelling of society as we know it.

Lets keep things in perspective here, it's a translation for a shopping site for which there is clearly a demand.

mate, do we have to discuss the convenience of an english website at Coop? NOOOOOOOOOT! yes, would be cool...easy, convenient...i agree it would be cool if wed speak all the same language, lets build babel tower!
BUT: why? where to stop? what else can be translated because there is a demand? i think everything thats in german. i cant speak french and of course it would be cool if all french companies, hotels, shopping sites i deal with would keep it in english too. but if i use my brain and figure out that the root the word comes from is latin and sounds a) a bit german b) a bit english-> must be thisn that...im set!

can somebody please raise a hand not speaking german and not able to order at coop online shop? id ben pleased to write a user guide line for you for free.

I don't at all oppose Coop using English on their site. I'd even like it. But I don't think that we have the right to demand they do.

You are a consumer with money in the hand that is waiting to go in said shop, you have the right to demand what you like. And by demand... lets not forget in this sense it means: "Getting interested parties to send an email petitioning Co-Op to translate their site". It's not like there are people camping out the headquarters refusing to let people leave the building...

So here we have a number of people who object
to some English-speakers daring to suggest to a
commercial organisation that it could be in their
financial interest to provide a facility in English.

Objecting in English.

Objecting via "English Forum".

Ah, the exquisite irony of it!!!

the general idea is ok, i agree. but i disagree about the signal it sets as there is no real(!) NEED. here is a sellers market as you have MIGROS and COOP (ok denner plus 2-3 more). thats why you can have a billion CHF on your account...and only those 2 options. so COOP gave a dump about it, as your moneys gonna be spend there anyhow. maybe COOP will change if you bomb enough mails down their inbox...

but why dont "you" use your brain instead of money only? and...where do you shop? i wonder how it is possible that i got no notice about expats dying, that we have a swiss Darfur here in ZH/CH where people die like flies as they cant buy food and tried to eat their money instead finding out: not healthy?

its so pointless when i hear: "darn, i wanna speak german and all i get back from the swiss are replies in english! it upsets me because it seems to indicate how bad my german is." i believe all those little "barriers" put away will help big time...

Thats kind of the point of the thread, and CO-Op said themselves they will provide it if demand is there.

Because people like Co-op and want to shop online there... I don't think it's a particularly complicated concept.

Jeez, what part of "do nothing and don't be uppity" don't you understand? Enough of your logic.

It is actually even more incestuous than that - Migros = Denner see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denner_(supermarkets)
"In January 2007 it was announced that Migros has purchased a majority stake in Denner"
and Carrefour used to be here until they sold their units to Coop in 2007.

Re: Coop and Migros Home Delivery in English please read

Before they add any extra languages to their website, I'd like to see them improve the functionality of it. It's typically extremely slow for me and this three columns (frames?) thing they have going on doesn't seem to help. Plus if I add last week's order to an empty basket it often doubles up the quantities. And because the whole thing's so slow it takes ages to manually adjust each item back again.

I would have thought a slick website should be the first priority for any online store. Worry about the languages later!

Hi everyone,

as you know both Migros and Coop do food home delivery BUT only Migros has the site in English.

Many of us also want Coop home delivery but need the English translation to be able to proceed with an order.

I have contacted Coop and they have advised me that if they get enough requests for an additional English translation to their site they will seriously consider adding it.

Please can you help by e mailing them to the address below your support for an English translation and also forward on to as many people as possible

Thanks
Caroline

send e mails to

Coopathome@coop.ch

Dear Caroline
Unfortunately, the coop@home Website is not available in English.
If the demand for a site on the English language increases, we will activate it.
Your Request adding English to the website for home delivery shopping should be sent to
Coopathome@coop.ch
Hi Caroline,

So it's now two weeks since the initial post and first emails were sent.
Any news?
Has anyone received a reply?
I haven't.

Cheers,
HB

Re: Coop and Migros Home Delivery in English please read

Hi,

I sent an email today as i'm due to have a baby in Feb and would like the choice of using Migros or Co-op especially being gluten free and both stores selling differant gluten free products.

Plus, I don't want to be 9 months pregnant and trying to carry bags of shopping in the snow. My husband comes shopping with me when he can but he only gets 5 days off a month and doesn't want to spend it food shopping and I don't blame him.

I wouldn't use this service all the time as I quite like going to the supermarket and seeing the products and I'm sure you pay a bit for the service, but every now and then could be useful. I could probably navigate and use the co-op website in German but to avoid any problems with delivery, out of stock products etc then of course English would be better and I'm thinking they'll have to do it eventually one day to keep up with competition and if not now then sometime in the future.

Good luck with the pregnancy, hope all goes well before the delivery (and I don't mean Co-op as that may take a bit longer )

Hello EF,

I've been passivley following a few conversations on here for a while. Anyway i clicked onto the website for the Swiss Army and noticed at the top of the page that it proposed "Deutsch Italiano English" as language choices. It slightly ammused me in relation to this topic as i couldn't think of a Swiss webpage that needed translating into english less...!

..it tickled me. Back to Lurkage
