The good news also for smokers is that everybody around town now busily establishes outdoor furniture. So that only Zürich-Gastro Ayatollah Mr Bachmann is unlucky, who would have liked a transition period of some years

btw., here in Zürich, just 22 days to go !

I could read through the 20 odd pages of posts, but if anyone knows on top of his head what the exceptions / allowances to the smoking ban are would do me a great favour

Ah - well I'm sorry to see I'm the exception rather than the rule.
I am glad to hear that you are a reasonable person. I do know some "reasonable" smokers, myself, but they are truly the exceptions.

If you were not the exception then banning smoking would probably not be necessary as restraint (or the lack there of) is the main reason that most people vote for the infringement of others' liberties.

For example, I have had to move my child out of children's play areas because parents were smoking on the children. And this after I specifically asked them to stop smoking. I haven't gotten to the point where I will commit a crime to stop someone from smoking around my daughter. Yet. "rolleyes"

Brian.

Re: Smoking bans to be effective 1st May 2010

A quick question for those in the know, will this affect shisha bars? In London the smoking ban obliterated most of the established Middle Eastern Shisha and juice bars, only a few managed to survive by offering it outside under patio heaters, charging upwards of 15 pounds a pipe

This has been the one logistical bungle that I have wondered about.
Of course, when I lived in Minnesota, I used to frequent a Halal restaurant that had Hookah pipe smoking on offer. It was the only smoking that they allowed. You could only smoke their product in their pipes and I only ever once had to share the restaurant with someone using this service.

The other one is what about cigar shops?

Brian.

Re: Smoking bans to be effective 1st May 2010

Both Shisha and Cigar shops are not excluded from the smoking ban, as far as I am aware... both would either need a fumoir or make it like basel - exclusive smoking clubs with memberships... I am sure they will be ready when the ban is in full swing.

Re: Smoking bans to be effective 1st May 2010

whatever happened to the right to choose?

Everyone knows the risks - if smokers choose to kill themselves by smoking that is up to them.

There should be places where non smokers can go enjoy a night out but there should also be places where smokers can go too!

If I as a non smoker chose to put myself at risk going somewhere there are smokers then it is up to me to accept the consequences. As an adult I can make the decision for myself and I do not need legislation to protect me.

There is no such thing as a risk free life!

by the way - before the hate mail from smokers starts - I chose to marry a smoker....

It does but the places here can establish fumoirs indoors, and in fact already have done so.

Re: Smoking bans to be effective 1st May 2010

And the smokers find their way...

As a non-smoker who occasionally have a ciggy when out (and that guarantees my night to end badly) I was very happy about the smoking ban getting effective on 1st April in Basel.

Saturday night I went to a club in Basel and was made sign that I was aware of there would be smoking inside and that I agreed to it...

Re: Smoking bans to be effective 1st May 2010

And now to rub salt into the wound...

Now that all the smokers are smoking outside on the terraces, to enjoy fresh air, I have to sit inside the bar on these lovely sunny days!

I think we should ban all smokers from (bar/restaurant) terraces as well!

Re: Smoking bans to be effective 1st May 2010

I like the fact when we go to Gymboree we have to pass throw a cloud of smoke with our kids because the smokers can't smoke inside anymore so they smoke in the entrance...

The good thing about this ban is we will finally be able to enjoy Basel's restaurants instead to go to Germany.

Re: Smoking bans to be effective 1st May 2010

Hi,

it will be interesting to see if the Fumoer's in Basel will still be legal after the 1st of May. At least it means it gives me a list of places to avoid.

If the major pubs in Basel can be smoke free and certainly do not look like they are any less busy then everyone can implement the law

Carlos: One step at a time

Have fun

Nah - you need the quick one-two combos - sucker punch them when they're already down, so they don't know what hit them!

Fumoirs are legal by the Federal law and the Cantonal law of Zurich. In Zurich, they are NOT to be larger than 33% of the locality in question and need to have a separate entry.

Well, here in Zurich it still is 10 days to go !

Re: Smoking bans to be effective 1st May 2010

When my husband and I came to Zurich the first time in 2004 we were both smokers(me=40 a day!) and we were elated to be able to smoke just about anywhere - in South Africa where we come from the smoking ban has been in effect for at least 8-10years and we did not enjoy it at all. Difficult to picture SA being one up on the Swiss in that regard.

We both quit smoking about 2.5 years ago and when we moved here in 2009 we were happy to see that there were no more smoking in the trains etc. I have heard that ex-smokers are worse than non smokers when it comes to moaning about the smell(ironic as we used to be the ones stinking to high heaven!).

Needless to say we are happy about the ban but feel the pain of the smokers especially in winter!

Does the ban cover underground in the stations as well?

Not THE ban (Cantonal or Federal), but the ban of the SBB/CFF/FFS as outlined here
http://www.news.ch/Rauchen+ade+bei+d...680/detail.htm
which means that on open Perrons, smoking still is permitted

Re: Smoking bans to be effective 1st May 2010

YYYYAY for smoking ban. I just went back to Manor in St. Jakob for the first time in 2 years. There was no smoke stink up the escalators and central area. I hated the place last time as there is a cafe at the bottom of the central area and you get the idea.

Now I just have to get over hating shopping malls, perhaps the Swiss can ban those next year?
