Not THE ban (Cantonal or Federal), but the ban of the SBB/CFF/FFS as outlined here
http://www.news.ch/Rauchen+ade+bei+d...680/detail.htm
which means that on open Perrons, smoking still is permitted
This is really stupid. Because, it means that we can't escape the smokers whilst waiting for our train. Oddly the smokers tend to spread out uniformly on platforms so that there is no place where the air is unpolluted.

The other problem is that when the train stops, the smoke from the platform seems to attack the trains at the open doors and windows and any air intake points so for the few minutes you are in station and the first few minutes after you leave you are by proxy in a smoking car.

This doesn't even address the psychopaths that can't even step off of a train without lighting a cigarette before they are on the platform. I have stopped being nice to these bastards. I just keep walking and if it shoves em off...

YYYYAY for smoking ban. I just went back to Manor in St. Jakob for the first time in 2 years. There was no smoke stink up the escalators and central area. I hated the place last time as there is a cafe at the bottom of the central area and you get the idea.

Now I just have to get over hating shopping malls, perhaps the Swiss can ban those next year?

CK
The smoking ban in the Canton of Zurich DOES include the shopping malls and practically all shops

I for example read newspaper articles like THIS one
http://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/zuerich/...dossier_id=532
which proves my comment above. You however ought to keep in mind that the various Cantonal bans stay in force, as the Federal ban is the minimum level, but is overruled if a Cantonal ban goes further

Wollishofener - the point is that CheesyKiwi writes that he hates shoping malls... irrespective, I believe, of whether they allow smoking or not.

Re: Smoking bans to be effective 1st May 2010

I was living in Ireland when they introduced the ban. As you can imagine, for Ireland - with one of the most thriving and healthy pub cultures in Europe - it met huge opposition and caused a lot of controversy. It hasnt got so much to do with civilization or injustice towards smokers more than allowing for both groups, smokers and non smokers to be happy and their rights respected.

Of course in the beginning there was outrage. Publicans refusing to turn their bars into smoke free establishments, outrage at the inevitable decline of business (which never happened) etc.

In time, the hype died down and a happy medium was found. Now, most bars have areas for smokers in the form of beer gardens with a sheltered area. Those parts of bars are actually the most social areas and lots of times non-smokers can be there as its where all the fun is happening. People are more likely to chat to each other when they arent surrounded by their friends while having a cigarette.

ooooooops ! very sorry. I when reading that post mis-understood and thought that CHeesyKiwi hated the smoking in supermarkets ! As the last person with a hating against "self-service supermarkets" passed away in 1970. The person in question was born in 1900, and I thought that this vintage had mostly gone away by now

Err, who is breaking the law? Not me. I guess it is complicated.

You don't stop on your way out of the train to light up. You wait until you are on the platform for god's sake. If you stop, then you deserve a foot up the backside.

Is this an admission that you behave in this fashion? If so then you are breaking the law. Sorry, it is that simple.

Brian.

Re: Smoking bans to be effective 1st May 2010

Having spent many a waiting moment (for busses, trams and trains) dodging people who indulge in the selfish act of polluting other peopleís air space, I relish the day when waiting zones are also classified as non smoking zones. That way I may also not have to move around the carriage to also avoid the foul stench of their breath when they set foot in the carriage.... And while Iím on my soap box....why is the act of throwing a cigarette butt on is the floor not considered as littering the environment?

Oh look. Somebody else who doesn't read before sniveling.

One day I too hope the internet will become important enough to affect me emotionally enough to whine randomly. I guess it's the nicotine going to peoples' heads.

Edit: Damn! It got me there, didn't it?

Re: Smoking bans to be effective 1st May 2010

So will all smoking have to cease in bars at midnight on Friday night?

The weather forecast in Zurich calls for rain and cooler temps on Saturday...maybe not the best weather for a smooth transition...
