Re: Smoking bans to be effective 1st May 2010

No But(t)s after May 1st
smoking-bans-effective-1st-may-2010-no-butts.jpg

So what song were they singing in this clip in Zurich after the announcement at midnight to extinguish cigarettes ?

It was so nice getting in tonight, having a shower, washing my hair and hanging out my clothes on the balcony knowing it was the last time I had to do it because of smoke.
I even almost enjoyed smelling how disgustingly smokey my shirt was, as I knew it was the last time.

Re: Smoking bans to be effective 1st May 2010

I just had a drink in the little cafe opposite platforms 21 - 24 at Zurich HB. This is a typical railway station commuter-and-lush sort of bar, in which one - up until now - was barely able to see from one side to the other for all the cigarette smoke in there.

This evening, the air was clear and, while not exactly fragrant, not entirely unpleasant.

I was opposed to the smoking ban in principle, but in practice, it's wonderful!

Happy breathing, all!

Re: Smoking bans to be effective 1st May 2010

Just back from Brugg Bahnhof. (Metro bar)
Even better than before. Now we have a private smoking room decorated Egyptian style WITH air conditioning. Just need some belly dancers and it will make smoking a pleasure
Will be really nice in Winter.

Most of my other haunts, we smoke in the garden anyway. (just like at home)
I like it !! Thanks for the ban Mrs President

Ironically enough, you may really appreciate some of these side effects come the hottest part of summer.

Re: Smoking bans to be effective 1st May 2010

Just went for a walk around the village; very quiet.
The 0.5 drink drive limit half killed the local bars & restaurants - be interesting to see if the smoking ban finishes them off.

I suppose I will have to learn to cook!!

Really? I haven't noticed that half of the restaurants have gone out of business. If anything over the past year or two there seem to be more.

Here in Vaud, the smoking ban, doesn't seem to be making much of a difference overall. Of course maybe it doesn't affect the simple canton of Vaud like it will affect Zurich.

Just in case, what recourse do you have if someone is smoking in a bar/restaurant?

Assuming that you point this out and the staff don't ask them to put it out and/or leave, can you call the police?

Maybe you should provide some links in French, since the_clangers lives in Vaud?

So no use to the_clangers at all, then, seeing as he was talking about Vaud?

The smoking ban in the Canton of Zurich DOES include the shopping malls and practically all shops

Not St Gallen under the federal ban, it would appear. I was surprised to smell smoke in the Pizolpark in Sargans today. Upon further inspection, the two cafe-bars in the centre were decked out with ashtrays and customers were smoking away.

Re: Smoking bans to be effective 1st May 2010

I would love to get out to Zurich more, as every time I have gone there I have enjoyed myself very much. But it is a 2 1/2 hour drive, which can go up to over 3 hours depending on how stupid the drivers on the Autobahn are. So I can't afford the petrol or the time to travel all the way there just to spend even more money on restaurants than I do here. Dealing with the trains isn't that much better as far as I can tell and isn't cheaper once I have to pay for my wife as well.

Oh, well, I am doomed to stay in Vaud, except for special occasions. Could be a lot worse, that sitting on the shore of Lac Leman.

Why would I be interested in Vaud; my topic was about Zürich.

Because the_clangers was comparing your predictions of what might happen in Zurich with his own observations of what did happen in Vaud, which went smoke-free some time ago.

Don't I know it.
Read some of my other posts.

I would have been better off in Zurich, as I don't speak French but I do speak German (badly )

Now you are spoiling my illusions.
I had this image of Vaud overflowing with good wine, French cuisine et belles filles.
