This was a major accident a few years ago in Dublin,
Tram crashed into a double decker bus,
Signal system failed to control the traffic crossing. http://www.dublinblog.ie/2009/09/16/...y-st-junction/
There has been many accidents like this in Dublin, but there Tram's are a new thing and it's just time until people realise they can't stop in the same breaking distance as a large truck or bus

The tram won, the car was basically triangular.
In an argument between a car and a tram the tram wins. More so with a pedestrian. | | | | | But a car has a "Knautsch-Zone" (rubber-zone ? ) giving the driver a chance of survival, a bycicle does not. |

| | Re: tram accident at Rigiplatz | Quote: | | | | | These things are very hard on the drivers, A friend of mine had the responsibility of dealing with the aftermaths of suicides on the railways and told me that frequently the drivers are unable to work ever again. I see far too many people chancing it in front of trams, someone made the correct point that these beasts do not stop on a dime, the older ones breaking is quite poor.
As an observation a high speed train takes a couple of kilometers to go from full speed to full stop. Bear that in mind if you decide to run in front of one. To put it bluntly my friend indicated that such an impact reduces the human body to kit form. | | | | | In case of trams in Zurich, you have to imagine that a tram on a route like the one in question accelerates up to between 40 and 45 km/h, and a Cobra for example has a weight of 39 tons, so that a braking-distance of some 10 meters (or more) is to be taken into account.
True, the old "Elefant"-Trams had a "rake" as visible here
which might have saved the life of this woman, experts however argue that under circumstances as above, just the impact as such kills

| | Re: tram accident at Rigiplatz | Quote: | | | | | in my opinion and experience after living in five different Western European countries Zurich has got to be the worst for road markings and safety on the road for cars and pedestrians alike. | | | | | Sorry, but that's just laughable.
Are you seriously trying to suggest that Zurich's road markings & road safety is worse than say, London, Paris or Milan?

While living in Denmark, I remember one day at a friend's house, I was talking with a train driver. He told me back then, that every train driver in DK witnesses the death of 1.5 people in average in his whole professional life (suicides, accidents). |

A nasty one at Lindenplatz last night very close to our flat.
A 66 yr old died after falling between the two connecting units of the (old style)No.2 tram at the L'platz stop and was dragged 70m.
Poor man & poor driver http://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/zuerich/...story/11351780

Poor man He was just crossing the road and the tram ramed on him..RIP. This also goes to show how fragile our life can be; one minute here and gone the next....

I can confirm this as we unfortunately had a clear view of the incident from our appt. :-(..........

You have to be constantly on the lookout for wayward pedestrians, cars and bikes, knowing that there's very little you can do to avoid hitting them.
We should have a "Hug a Tram Driver" day.

Was heading home last night and heard all the announcements about the no.2 stopping at Letzigrund and going no further... terrible news.
Not sure how much stock to set in the Tägi article, but it seems to suggest that the guy was drunk...? | Quote: | | | | | Angeblich war beim Unfall aber Alkohol im Spiel. Laut Angaben von mehreren Personen sass der Mann bis kurz vor dem Unfall in einer Bar, wo er als guter Gast bekannt war. | | | | | Rough translation - Allegedly alcohol was involved. According to witnesses, the man was sat in a bar where he was well known until shortly before the accident.

Selfish, I had to re-route and take the 3 to Fellenberg before getting the 67 home.
These people never think of the inconvenience they cause.

Regardless it's a loss of human life, and if you want to get all thinky about it a lot of folks lost lives directly or indirectly for us to have all the conveniences we have today. Taking a detour to get home is pretty small stuff...
