What to do with kids in Winter?

Can anyone please tell me good ideas for things to do in Zurich with children in the winter? I have a five year old and 14 year old twins.

Get them skiing or snowboarding, asap! The twins will be the perfect age to start boarding, and the 5-year old could do into a Kinder ski-club first to find his fee, there are tons of other kids the same age whizzing around the slopes!

A quick look at the Urdorf website would suggest that there is lots going on in your area from story hour, to crafts to supporting the local ice hockey club!

Good luck with that,

Jim

Re: To do with kids in Winter

I could recommend indoor climbing. Check two places here:http://www.kletterzentrum.com/images/splash/splash.html

The deal there is that you need to take a 200SFr safety course first, but then you are allowed to anchor your own kids. Once you have the safety certificate, which is VERY EASY to get (pay and show up), the prices are reasonable for kids to visit later, some 15-23SFr, depending on the day of week and it's even less if you have some equipment.

I'm sure they would explain the details in english if needed.
PM me if you have some questions. We go about once every 4-6 weeks if you want to tag along to check it first. My kids, 9 and 11, and their friends really enjoy it.

Alpamare is loads of fun too, but it is somewhat outside of Zurich, down the lake. Technorama in Winterthur is worth a visit too.
But overall, Richdog is right, get them boarding or skiing.
Of course there's more expensive things to do, but not everyone can afford horseback riding, kart racing, bodyflying, etc.

I agree with Richdog....skiing/snowboarding! In terms of ski schools, we had very limited success for our young one in the Swiss ski schools you find everywhere. We started at Brunni and tried a few others, but we feel they are MASS and don't typically have enough instructors for the amount of young children they are trying to ski. Our daughter was bored to tears at 4 and 5 years old.

However, last year I stumbled upon the Vreni Schneider school in Elm (about 1 hour from here) http://www.vrenischneider.ch/. (She is an Olympic gold medal winner) and what do you know, our little girl (5 years old) was taking the lift and skiing on her own within hours. She absolutely loved it. They also have a ferienprogram where they bus kids from Zürich during the sport holidays. Good luck!

One more thing, have you tried sledding on the Albis? It's really nice, especially when it's cold and grey in Zürich.

Just a thought - Have you actually asked your children what they want to do?

Re: What to do with kids in Winter?

Skiing, snowboarding obvious.

Schinznach Bad: indoor/outdoor thermal baths in Schinznach. There is a comprehensive list of thermal baths in Switzerland here:
http://www.badi-info.ch/schwimmbaeder_thermal.html

Alpamare: heated indoor/outdoor water park in Pfäffikon.

Trampolino: indoor kids play park in Dietikon. They also have a cafe and free WiFi while you're waiting. A similar place just around the corner (both near to Mediamarkt).

Urdorf has a great indoor pool.

The huge indoor rain forest at the Zurich zoo.

Technorama in Winterthur: huge science museum for kids and adults.

Ice skating: Urdorf has a rink next to the outdoor Badi.

Bowling (bowling alley near to Urdorf close to the Mcdonalds in Schlieren).

Low-elevation walking or biking (from Urdorf you can reach the Limmat by bike in 10 minutes, then bike all the way to the Zurich main station along the river, have lunch at Klosterfahr).

Re: What to do with kids in Winter?

not sure about winter , but here's a great one for spring ;

buy a box of smarties ...take out all colours except GREEN .

throw 12 green smarties onto the lawn.

tell the little ones you have thrown thirteen out and they must find them all before returning indoors.

sit back , relax.
