Budget english speaking hairdresser in Basel?

Hi everyone!

I've been searching in the forun the threads about this, but haven't found a budget hairdresser among the recommendations you have given.

I've seen the great comments about Barry, but he may be a peak out of my budget, specially, because there is not that much hair left to cut in my head

So...if anyone has any reccommendation would be greatly apreciated...

Re: Budget english speaking hairdresser in Basel?

Barry is indeed a fine cutter of hair, but is it really so difficult to say "Ich möchte einen Haarschnitt wie - bitte kurz" to a german speaking barber?

Plenty of 15-35 SFr Barbers in around Claraplz. (Although the one I head to next to "Lillys" on Claraptz speaks some English to me, but is far better in his native Italian)

If it's any help, Klaus & Klara in Claraplatz are OK, and most of the staff speak at least hairdressing English

I heard of these but so far didn't find them. Could you therefore please cite a few (name and possibly address)? I don't mind if they speak Arabic, Turkish, German, English or even Baslerdiitsch, I always got my hair cut to my expectations anywhere in the world

Re: Budget english speaking hairdresser in Basel?

Ok. Here's the cheapest place to get your hair cut in Basel. I don't know the name, but it's on the Feldbergstrasse, just past the Klybeckstrasse. Across the street from the Mattheuskirche and just past the little "erotic" films shop. It's a tiny little hole-in-the-wall barbershop with one guy who works there all the time. He DOES speak some English, as I remember I went there when my German was less than minimal.

The place is an experience in itself. There are no appointments and the whole place is about the size of a largish bathroom. The guys who come there sit or stand waiting for their turn. There is a little table filled with old car magazines, old Baslerstabs, and old pornos. What a surreal slice of reality to see old guys lazily perusing pornos while waiting for their two remaining hairs to be trimmed!

There is also a rather small aquarium with a rather small fish and posters of karate and mannequins from the 80s.

The price makes it even more interesting. It was F o u r t e e n franks for a student (or retired) cut, slightly more for a normal cut. The thing is, everyone gets more or less the same trim. This is not necessarily a problem if you want that particular cut. He does that cut all day and is well-practiced in it! It's a sort of generic male short look. I saw a few women in there, but only the brave who wanted a quick trim.

I go to Coiffeur Krivo (Feldbergstrasse 87, 4057 Basel). The barber is a Kurd who doesn't speak a word of English but we seem to get along. To be honest I quite like the silence

The prices for hairdressers at all make me cringe these days... gone are the days when I could spend $150+ on dye, cut and style.

When I think "budget" though, I think something like SuperCuts where you are in and out for about $12 and I don't think there are many (any?!) places like that here. I DID see a salon which seemed pretty similar in setup to a SuperCuts in the same building as Aldi over in the Clarasomething area (sorry, not familiar with Klein Basel and terrible with street names anyhow )... I do not recall looking at their price list though.

Also I've heard some people talk about a beauty school in Basel where a student does the cut and then the teacher comes by and asks how you like it and does any adjustments you require. I've never been there though. I cut my husband's hair and Wayne cuts mine.

Does anyone know where this beauty school might be? There are plenty of hairdressers who will knock 15 franks off the 100F total if the intern cuts your hair.

Re: Budget english speaking hairdresser in Basel?

This is what my friend says...

"It’s right across Nr.3 Tram Stop at Barfüsserplatz. It’s called O-Planet where the steps start to the Musical Academy. You sometimes have to wait a long time, if you want a specific cutter like me. I only want Henry (French), I’ve had him for 10 years now and he is absolutely perfect for my head. Each service is now 20.00 (washing + cutting + spraying). Dry fan another 20.00, unless you do it on your own, then it’s 10.00. S*** goes to the same place, but at Claraplatz (Migros, 1st floor). But Henry is only at Barfy the boss."

Re: Budget english speaking hairdresser in Basel?

Recently Arrived in Basel and in need of cut and blow-dry (ladies). Is this Canadian chap still in business, and how much is reasonable! The best part of 100chf seems extortionate to me, and that's from someone who is used to London prices!!

Re: Budget english speaking hairdresser in Basel?

I don't know about Wayne - although I think he's still around - but I can recommend Kairung at Coiffure Highlight http://www.coiffeur-highlight.ch/
Central location and she's lovely (nice to be able to chat to your hairdresser as well as get a haircut) and she does a good cut. Can't remember exactly what I paid last time - around 75CHF I think.

Our kids and my husband go to Claus & Carla on Claraplatz and they all like it - a few of the stylists speak English there but not a lot and there are so many it's sometimes hard to get the same person twice. I don't think it's any cheaper either.

Kairung (of Coiffure Highlight, Rheingasse 28) indeed does a good job and gives you the haircut you just wished.

Re: Budget english speaking hairdresser in Basel?

I'd also like to recommend Kairung from Coiffure Highlight http://www.coiffeur-highlight.ch/

She's the owner of this salon.

Today she did my hair (including cut and color/highlights) and she did a great job. She is very nice, speaks English and NOT expensive - cheaper than ALL other places I went to get price quote from.

I always go in Claraplatz to Taglio&Stile, these are two guys that can speak English and they do a great job for around 30CHF:
