Only a matter of time before they block EF for me at work....

After the recent mass blocking of various websites of category humor to blogs to anything remotely entertainment related, its only a matter of time before they block even englishforum here in office (guess, Im sure lots of EFers work here)

Lets face it they pay you to work and not to write witty posts on EF... Heaven forbid that they would expect you to earn some of your salary!

Which then brings up the question, if they're going to block everything of interest why did they even make the internet accessible in the first place..??
I can't speak for any of you but at my work place there's absolutely nothing online (apart from email) that I need to have access to to perform my job. That goes from my computer all the way up to the boss's comp..!

So do any of you really need internet access to do your job..?

Re: Only a matter of time before they block EF for me at work....

I do need the internet to do my job, as I deal with some technologies that are very complex, and need research and often collaboration to resolve some issues. Also, many vendor's helpdesks are now accessed via internet.

With my client there are three levels of websites. 1. Open access. 2. Enter your password, and your usage is logged, so you need a valid reason, 3. No access.

When it was initially introduced, EF was in 2 - now it's in 1. No idea why. Dilbert has always been in 1.

Odd - as I was entering this, I got a network failure. And I'm at home!

Pickles, you got my feelings. I definitely would not be able to work if I hadn't full access to the Web. But there is always a plan B as you already heard. Good luck though!

If I was in HR or senior leadership at a company with a significant number of expats here in Switzerland, I'd block it too. I don't know about corrupting, but it definitely is a time sinkhole that doesn't contribute to work activities, however great it may be for other needs.

Either that, or check the timestamps of people's posts... well, taking action on that may well be illegal, but it's a thought, eh? :-)

Yes, in my field (website creation/maintenance, etc.) it is an essential.

Sure the internet is essential for work purposes but if you are aimlessly surfing the net and getting on EF forums then that cannot be deemed work related.

This is not a matter of the importance of the internet as a work tool but how many people use it to fill their time. If postings work related (on EF) then no one would complain but lets face it, its probably not.

Consider the view point from an employers view. Would you accept that somebody who you were paying good money for was needless being unproductive and not maximizing your investment. I am not advocating that the web should be restricted if people can be trusted not to abuse the situation. I just think that If I was paying 100k plus, I am not sure that I want somebody discussing minarets and where to buy HP sauce (although the second one is vital information) in company time.

I wonder what the EF would look like during the day if all those who post during their working hours would disappear...
Probably like on the weekends, pretty deserted.

Facebook, Youtube and webs like that are blocked at my work.
But I find it perfectly justified to take a peak to EF while my colleagues go out for a smoke....

Fair point I guess its all about limits. I had someone who swore that he never surfed on the communal commuter but when I did a search for jpg and mpeg files found all sorts of pictures that were hardly suitable viewing for a work environment.

I really can't believe they can do that with a electric food whisk
