New Year Fireworks in Zurich, anyone been there before?

Hi, just wondering if I should bring my friends from the UK to visit the place on that day and watch the fireworks on New Year's Eve.

The problem is that from my past experience of attending New Year Fireworks in other country, it always be quite a chaotic event for parents with kids as there are long queue for the toilets and the kids has to stands for long hours at the good point in cold weather... it is too crowd that the kids has nothing to see if their dads are not holding them up for a clearer view etc.. I am not trying to complaint as understandably the crowd and the noise is all expected but just wonder if the one is Zurich is any better so that I can take the risk and take the parents with young kids to this event in Zurich? Thanks!

Re: New Year Fireworks in Zurich, anyone been there before?

The trick with the fireworks is to head down to the lake late ish about 11.30 and head down towards the side of the lake on the seefeld side, the further down you go the more space there is. We have done this every year and it's not crowded.

The fireworks are set off from a boat in the middle of the lake so there is no problem with not being able to see - and after all they do go up so everyone just look up

I have not seen toilets but then i never go up to the bridge area, there may be toilets up there. As we go down late then toilet is not normally the problem.

Once fireworks finished then head off to the destination of choice, Stadelhofen will likely be busy but they put trains on all night plus bigger train to accommodate more around midnight

Hope this helps
Nicky

The alternative of course is to other side towards Hafen Enge, Bad Mythenquai, Ziegel-au-Lac, or places like the Restaurant Bürgli, or from the "Big" Church Wollishofen over the "Egg"

Interesting - So how far down the Seefeld side do you reckon I'd need to go in order to setup a camera and tripod safely?

So far I've seen the fireworks from Bellvue and from Kirche Fluntern but there's always been far too many people around to really use a camera-tripod setup.

we always head down to the area between the audi garage and the Uto bathing area (forget the proper name). We get there at 11 ish and often manage to commandeer one of the raised flower beds for standing on or resting drinks etc..

I would never go to the bridge or belvue

The fireworks are really worth seeing- so saying that make sure you stand up wind!

Last year all I saw was the smoke that hung around the lake from the fireworks.

I'm definitely doing what Nicky suggested and heading down the lake as those folks seemed to have a better view.

Happy new year!

thanks everyone for the useful suggestions! i think i will be there around 11ish but then i wonder if there is any nice place to have a decent yet not that expensive dinner for a group of people on that particular day or just to stay home and go out only for the fireworks...

Well I got told off for suggesting this on another thread but if you have people visiting then i'd recommend staying at home and eating together then heading to the lake later. Everywhere will likely be busy and expensive and also as previously stated but not deemed helpful (but it may be to you) I have known people be still sat in the restaurant waiting for desert after midnight and missing the fireworks

BTW, the fireworks display is scheduled for 0.20, so don't be surprised that there's no fireworks at midnight!

Re: New Year Fireworks in Zurich, anyone been there before?

May I suggest considering a completely different way of attending the fireworks? From Üetliberg Kulm! Not a big crowd there, additionally, there is a restaurant up there, too. Trains down to the city run throughout the night (00:06, 00:46, 00:56, 01:06, 01:30, 02:30, 03:30).

Is this still true? I'm considering going up to Uetliberg, but am fearing a crowd too big to actually see anything...

I don't know how it will be this year on the Uetliberg. I will go to the St Peter Church where they between 23.15 and 23.45 will play Tangoes on Accordeon and Piano. Rev Greminger will present the whole thing. And then there is sufficient time to get over to the General Henri Guisan Quai where you can find, on the side of the Mezzogiorno Restaurant, nice places to see the fireworks. Excellent view, and not very crowded

This is a good idea! I'll take my kids up there too, if someone can confirm how big the crowds there are likely to be...

Wherever you head to, be aware that if it is foggy many of the fireworks can disappear from sight. I stood by the lake a few years ago watching the clouds glow in a variety of colours

I guess that in a situation like this, Uetliberg would be a good idea if it is above the fog/cloud

This is normal there is usually a big firework (one only) at midnight then nothing till 00:20 during which time you are meant to cuddle and get cute which takes 20 mins then the firewoks actually start.

The fireworks are good if you have not seen big ones before but compared to some locations they are actually rather small and cute.

I was there today. It was superb, and the dry weather helped a lot. Found a nice place on the stairs of Kongresshaus from where there was a full view onto the lake

The French celebrate differently;
"A New Year's Eve tradition for some in France of torching empty, parked cars has continued.
Interior Minister Manuel Valls said Tuesday that 1,193 vehicles were burned overnight around the country, where the stunt began in the 1990s. "

really a perfect evening for the fireworks last night, our whole family had a wonderful time. even if, sadly, the highlight for our kids was a stand selling "American" carnival donuts.

The televised transmission in Zürich was one of the worst I have ever seen. The third world countries did 100% better! Unacceptable for a " rich" land. Sound was a disaster and the camera shots ( or should I say " shot") as well.
