YES! Finally moving to Zurich!...but is it really better?

For the past 2 years I've been living between California and Wollerau. My husband and I haven't moved to Zurich yet, because we have a free place in Wollerau; however, now that we're moving to Switzerland permanently we've decided to move to the Zurich (around Enge). Zurich seems to offer diversity, great food, a vibrant nightlife, and most importantly, the opportunity to build a social network. In deciding to either buy a house in Wollerau or move to Zurich, is Zurich all that I'm building it up to be?

Wollerau is a bit distant from town, by Swiss standards. Zürich-Enge indeed is both out of downtown and a few steps from downtown. And close to the lake. I would recommend Zch-Enge.

Re: YES! Finally moving to Zurich!...but is it really better?

Who said Zurich is better...? Considering/comparing the taxes you pay in Wollerau, you might think twice about coming to Zurich. As for Enge: Not really a hipe place (Wolli and I should know, we both went to school there..), except in very expensive locations along the lake (Mythenquai). Just make sure you get many more opinions of experienced EFers and only then decide.

Enge is basically in the heart (or quite near)the heart of Zurich...Busy...Lots of Trams stop there, you have the train station, lots of shops, the lake right behind you, hotels, lots of restaurants. Its right near the financial district too...Lots of banks..Bahnhofstrasse(main street in Zurich) just 5 minutes away walking...If you go a bit further up on (Seestr) it is better...quieter...nice side streets...More expensive too for rents, well most of Zurich is...it depends on what you are looking for...If you want to live in a quiet area then Enge is not the place...If you want night life, busy streets etc...then Enge will suit you fine...

your expectations depend to a great deal on your family situation....how old are you and your hubby? Do you have kids? What are your backgrounds?

Is there really a need to make "SWISS friends" ? And compared to Wollerau, Zürich is like London and New York combined. In Zurich, folks have the possibility to establish social networks including people from places around the globe.

And if your feeling is that there is not even a daylife, you simply live in the wrong place. There sure are more exciting places in the world to go to. If you are hanging around here just because you have an overrated salary, then you miss out on the points that much of your high "Gage" is eaten up by the rather high prices for everything and that life and "standard of living" is not defined by salary alone.

As with any opinion it probably sais more about the person giving it than the subject.
But seriously, it really depends on you and how proactive you are. Are you often in Zürich and Enge ? I find Enge a bit boring, but nice location. I think it's difficult to advise you here without knowing what you want.

Re: YES! Finally moving to Zurich!...but is it really better?

Well, I am unashamedly biased in favor of the Ausserschwyz area... but I suspect we might have very different likes, dislikes and goals.

I would hate living in Zürich - I even found Männedorf a tad too urban for my taste, and I'm now am starting to think my sleepy little SZ town is getting too crowded. As I see it, nightlife is easily found, breathing room is not - and breathing room is by far more important to me. So my preference is to live farther out, traveling into the city when the mood strikes.

But if city life is important to you, you will obviously be better placed in Zürich. Where do you spend your free time now? I've found we are happiest when we live where we play, and commute farther into work if necessary, rather than the opposite. But, it really boils down to personal preference.

As for building a network of friends - who knows? I've found a good circle of x-pats out here in Ausserschwyz. Perhaps because there are not so very many of us out here, one seemed to make friends - or at least pleasant acquaintances - sort of by default, if that makes any sense. I found it more difficult to find kindred spirits among expats in the city, even though the population was far larger. I would guess that simply is the difference between living in a city vs. a village. But if you are an out-going, open kind of person you will probably thrive in any environment.

(If you are used to paying Wollerau taxes, do make sure you understand the difference between Wollerau and Zürich; depending on your individual circumstances you could be in for a shock once you are filling in ZH tax returns. )

One thing I've learned in my many moves, living in many different kinds of places: nothing is forever. If you think you'd like Zürich, by all means give it a try! You can always move on in a few years, as your life changes.

Good luck with your decision.

you in many ways ARE in Zurich. Rather closer to Zurich than people in Wollerau. Practically in an outer suburb .

i also don't think the schaffhausen locals would appreciate being considered an 'outer suburb' of zurich. damn you arrogant zurchers

a devastating and aggressive "opinion" in fact, which is heavily "into arguing". And of course raising questions about why you stay in such a place.

The Schaffuusers KNOW to be considered an outer suburb of Zurich !

And while I DID walk to Germany from Schaffhausen with our grandmother, you must be a very fast walker if you do it in the time of taking a train to Zürich. Unless of course you take the train to Singen !

The trains to Singen in my schooltime were those big steam locomotive driven ones on the "upper side" of the SH train station my brother and me so much loved to see !

Re: YES! Finally moving to Zurich!...but is it really better?

Just to give you guys some background:

I am 25 and my husband around the same age. We work in Samstagern, but we like going out in Zurich for dinner and weekend parties. I've made a valiant effort and have been successful in buidling a small group of friends through the EF. For me it's inconvenient to have to take the S2 35 minutes to Zurich and the S8 55 minutes back if I want to go out with friends Thurs-Saturday-especially alone at 4am.

We don't have any children and don't plan to have any soon, so we want to enjoy a more active life while we don't have children. I plan to attend UZH next fall *crosses fingers* for the Masters program, so I figure that's another reason to move.

My main question was, does that 20 minute drive/ 35 min train ride really make a difference? From what I'm reading, it seems like I should give Zurich a go.

In my opinion: You bet your sweet #@# it does.

I used to live in Zug, which is about half an hour by train, and I always found it inconvenient to go out for a night in Zürich. Now that I live here (in the Niederdorf, which is about as "the heart of things" as you can get), I find it much much much easier to get plastered with my buddies or do random meetups for dinner or whatnot.

When you live here in Zürich, things just don't require as much planning, and you can live much more spontaneously - which, being American, may be more your style.

Good luck!
