It's true, if you're interested in a hotdog, burger, milkshake or the only proper Dr Pepper left, the USA is the place.

Although in all reality---a decent burger can be made absolutely anywhere. I don't think you can distinguish a generality of ground beef in the US.

Hotdogs---not to sure, better left unasked :P

sure but when one wants to have it served on a proper bun and choice of a beverage with nice seasoned fries it is a different story

Anyone else want to put their's together ?
You know, I flew into Heathrow once.....I guess that makes me qualified to comment about all things UK.

People have been asking me whether they should leave America for CH.

Having been to the US for a couple of business trips on a plane, I feel suitably qualified to answer them, so here's my starting list:
I think the British dark humour got lost on a few people here.

Probably got lost in all the sanctimonious background noise of British expats.

Re: Ten Reasons to Leave America for Switzerland

Ah, this may have been started rather tongue in cheek, but here's my real list:

  1. Healthcare for everyone in Switzerland (even if expensive, it is mandatory to have insurance here...and some help from the government if you need it)
  2. Homelessness isn't prevalent
  3. Rednecks here aren't quite as bad as the US
  4. Plastic people in the US
  5. Plastic houses in the US
  6. Guns being common in the US
  7. Vacation time (or lack thereof in the US)
  8. Rah rah sis boom bah patriotism in the US
  9. The American sports culture - what, you don't like X sport, what's wrong with you?
  10. The guy with the most votes doesn't always become president

That being said, I do miss 24 hour shopping (or at least evening and Sunday shopping!), the ability to live cheaply because there's more chocie and opportunity to save money. And my friends. Would I ever go back for those things? No way.

Re: Ten Reasons to Leave America for Switzerland

1. Switzerland's proximity to America's lapdog, the UK. I'm just a short flight away from the best British culture has to offer, like KFC, Subway, rampant obesity, and a somewhat edible imitation of Vermont cheddar. Almost like home, but much smaller, cloudier, and with a puzzling lack of dentists.

Downsides: Switzerland has far more flag-waving and overly sensitive UK expats than the US.

I think the Dr. Pepper you find in any Coop here in Switzerland is identical to Dublin Dr. Pepper. The only difference is real sugar instead of corn syrup, no?

As much as I like American burgers, what actually goes into the burger meat is nothing short of criminal.

Yup thats the only difference and what a huge difference it is! Taste is totally different - cane sugar is sweeter and sharper. They say HFCS is one of the leading causes of obesity in the West.

I started making a list to reply to this - and realized that the opposite list (reasons to live in America instead of CH) was growing much faster.

Maybe I'm not as downsettled here as I thought... or maybe I've just got the rose-tinted glasses on again. Anyway, think I'll stop now before I get any more homesick.
"Downsettled" ??? You just upmade that, didn't you?

Anyway, makesading to hear you're a bit sickhomed,
hope that it bettergets...

This is why, if you can, you need to get hold of some Mexican Coca-Cola, which is made using cane sugar.

Re: Ten Reasons to Leave America for Switzerland

Hm, I miss how generally up beat Americans are, open, cheerful, positive, supporting..So what it is not always 100% honest, but what is nowadays, at least it keeps you on your toes reading people's cues. Makes one more street smart. If you are perky here people find you suspicious. Or nuts.

Yet another reason to split the States for here: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/22/us.../22scotus.html . The Supreme Court released a decision yesterday to lift the ban on corporate spending during elections. Let's hear it for even *more* corruption in U.S. politics.

yep...saw this 2 days ago...amazed that this was able to go through in the current climate with growing publick anger and at same time the extra fees/regulations Obama is proposing...perhaps it was a political move...slam the fees/regulate more but also allow the other pocket to be filled with unlimited bribes...very sad and disturbing..

It's not too surprising if you look at how the justices voted and who appointed them.
