There not a "gang" they are just a bunch of older kids. who gives a damn.
Fine go to the police and see what happens
Go talk to the principal and see what happens
Go and hold his hand everyday and see what kind of person he becomes.
We all get bullied at one point and bully at another. It is called being a kid.
Im glad the way my parents tought me to stand up for myself.
And on the karate kid point: its not the fact that you are gonna beat up everyone around you but the fact the other kids know you do karate.....will make em mellow down a bit

1 not go down from a snowball
2 learn how to run.
3 learn how to take a blow (in this case from the snowball)
4. learn how to talk back
Yes I am very well aware that he is 6 but those little fellas are quit capable of defending themselves if YOU let them. | | | | |
how many children do you have??
2. learn how to run - from where to where? its a village ffs the boy will be running for the rest of his life
3. er ok, the boy is 6!!
4. again, wtf! wind up a bully, really good move that, how to make your life worse.
Our son was bullied a bit when we first came here, a quick meeting with the teacher sorted it out, now the bully is one of his best friends.

Everybody was bullied? yes sometimes by a parent that does not mean it should be considered normal.

Always fight fire with fire? Not a very useful life skill outside of the playground, is it?
Parents who support a child (particularly one as young as 6) will give the child confidence that they are always there for him no matter what. What kind of message does a child get when a parent gives him a punchball or a course of martial arts lessons and tells him to learn to sort his own battles out?

I agree with you principally, a child should know how to protect him/herself.
But what is it going to be next? 4yr olds taking kickboxing classes, because that's life? Because their parents didn't step in to protect them?
I agree that parental intervention sometimes does create more trouble and more bullying happens. But sometimes it is the oposite, you know? Especially here, a lot of kids seem genuinely respecting the authorities (teachers, parents) so if they did something so awful as they did, it is because they didn't count on that boy reporting or didn't believe in any consequences. Let's surprise those little bastids, though. I am all for nipping violence in the bud, while it is "only" bloody noses in the snow. Since if you do jack-sh*t now to make your kiddo feel ok to go to school again, it might create big problems for him later on. Training takes time. It's a good idea, though, sure.

I'd agree that kids knowing you do martial arts does to some extent help, I did martial arts for quite a few years in my school days, but, You will always get someone who see's it as a challenge, lets go beat up the karate kid (the 2 black belts in our class both got a huge beating from a gang who saw them on tv)
And martial arts are generally only any help fighting another martial artist, street fighting is completely different and usually ends up as a bundle on the gound, not much chance to use you roundhouse kick!
It gives you a totally false sense of security

No but self defence classes will not only help to protect yourself, it creates mainly confidence.
As I checked in the marketplace even, confidence is most feared by people....
Fight fire with fire, In this case yes cause he is 6, if anything he will prob become good friends with him cause he stood up for himself.
On another note maybe you noticed the people responding here have all been bullied and took the steps they recommend....
I have been bullied also, stepped up to the plate and guess what It stopped ...

Isnt that the lesson someone needs the most.
I would prefer knowing that my rents are behind me in the case I could resolve it myself.... just my view

It gives you a totally false sense of security | | | | | Yeah, I agree. I did Kung-fu and can meditate, hold my balance, and all the other useless stuff. Could probably whack someone quite elegantly with some stick. But street fights are totally different.
My brother did Judo after he was bullied, and it was cruel for a little child. So many falls and rough hits, it was like he was beat up a few times a week in his Judo class just so he gets used to being beat up in real life...
He finally quit his Judo class after his eyes got bad and his glasses thick from falling so much. But it did create a myth amongst his peers, and mine, haha, so there is a bit of truth in it, as well.

It gives you a totally false sense of security | | | | | not quite true if the kids learn to be humble even if they do martial arts. It's important to tell them it's for defence and not offence.
my girl was only 2 years old when she got beaten up by 3 same age kids. The teacher said she just stood there and not fight back or saying no. She still have the scar on face even after 4 months! At home, I always teach my girl not to hit people but obviously it's wrong. Now I didn't say it anymore but i keep on reminding her to push people away and say no if she gets attacked.
I'm actually considering sending her to learn basic martial art soon. There're always aggressive kids in a class and you could hardly avoid it. Even worse, there're terrible parents not know how to teach their kids the basic manner -not beat people up. That's why we need to start teaching our kid to defend.
