Re: Cost of living in Lausanne

Thanks to everybody for the several and usefull answers!
I understood that rent, food () and health assurance are prevalent in a budget.
I think that 2500-3000 CHF/month (no tax) is the minimum salary to live in Lausanne. It is a lot of money... But life is almost enjoyable?

The EPFLers I know appear to be enjoying themselves and no "almost" about it. I venture to predict that you will too, after a short adjustment period.

I used to live decently with 1200/1300 a month, so you should be ok with 2500/3000...
Switzerland has one of the highest quality of life rates in the world, and Lausanne has a lot to offer: museums, restaurants, bars, parks, theatres, shops, the lake, a very good municipal library, and the slopes are not far, if you fancy a bit of skiing!
Not sure how that works for foreigners, but you can get subsidies for your health insurance if you're on a low budget.
Everything will seem very pricey at first but you are going to enjoy yourself for sure once you'll have figured out the dos and donts and will be "swiss-smart".

Re: Cost of living in Lausanne

I too lived decently and even managed to go on occasional holidays and save a little bit of money while getting 1600/month for quite a few years.

Lodging is the most expensive in Lausanne (and the most difficult to find!!!). But if you're ready to flatshare, your can live perfectly well!

EPFL is full of foreigners working and studying there, and English is the general lingua franca, so it's a pretty international background!

And if you miss seeing girls or meeting 'non-geek' persons (just kidding lol), University is just a few minutes away!

OK 5000 before taxes equals 3200ish take home pay. Single apart in Lausanne if you are lucky will be 1750/month, on your own, Private medical is 400/month, utility bills/ Tv hookup say 140/month, your mobile telephone say 100/month, Lausanne public transport pass 70/month, groceries 600/month (20 chf/day). You'll have to put up a caution for your apart, probably 3 months rent in advance.

Hi, I am going to start my MS thesis in EPFL from September - 2011 as a exchange student. I wanna know about accommodation cost over there. I have my wife with me. So I wanna rent an aparment with one bed room + one bathroom(with toilet) and kitchen(kitchen can include or excleude with apatrment). So the apartment can be around 20 m2. which will be cheap and suitable for rent, student apartment or other apartment? what about the Asian(like Indian) food cost for every person in a month, if I cook in my apartment personally? I don't have car so I don't need garage. what about the travel cost in each month? what about pert-time work facility over there?
Best Regards,
Zaman

If it is just 6 months, why are you bringing your wife?

You can live with little as a student but without money your wife will be bored to death in lausanne.

Cuz he loves her & wants to be with her?! And she loves him and wants to be him. & she wants to get a change to live somewhere else & experience a new culture too. &, &, &.....

Why would she bored to death in Lausanne???? I'm sure she's quite capable to entertain herself. There is plenty to do in Lausanne.

Cost of Living in Lausanne

I am looking to study in University of Lausanne (UNIL) next year and plan on applying for a scholarship to fund my studies.

The Scholarship provides 1920 swiss francs per month for a full year.

UNIL website has a breakdown of costs for living and studying in Lausanne:

Study cost

Living expenses in Lausanne

Average monthly budget

Food and personal care
CHF 850 - 900

Housing utilities
CHF 550 - 700
<--- FOR REAL?

University fees
CHF 580/semester (waived for exchange students)

Health and accident insurance
CHF 150 - 300

Books and school supplies
CHF 100 - 150

Total: CHF 1900 per month

Is this an accurate depiction? A lot of Universities I know would make the costs look a lot lower than it actually is.. and I also know that the housing situation in Switzerland is insanely expensive. The cost that they've outline does NOT look realistic...

I want the perspective of someone who has lived in Lausanne and what they think about the breakdown that UNIL has provided above.

Thank you very much for your help.

The prices listed above are in theory possible.

There are flats for those prices out there. Not that many and I imagine there is competition. It's also possible to get a flat share in the price range, which is probably best. The higher you can go the more options you have. I'd ask if they have some suggestions for housing. I'm sure they have a site for students that has ad and stuff.

We spent 800 per month on food for two people. I think half of that (or less) is perfectly possible.

Health insurance if you're young is possible at that price. It will probably entail having a high deductible.

There are things that are missing on the budget though namely transportation, month pass is 70, and mobile phone, 200 (if you are like me!!!) or 50/75 (if you know how to control your mobile phone usage), and you'll have to tack on TV, Internet, etc on if they are not included in your rental flat.
