Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

2 years and 1 month. Came with hubby, left hubby and haven't looked back since. Strange country, strange rules. I thought I had seen it all living in Germany for 16 years before that but no, they do take the biscuit here... Still, love the country, love the weather, love it basically. Ain't going back to Germany, hopefully I won't have to

Not sure.... I've tried that trick so many times since arriving here... ... with pretty poor results. Reality always comes after me...

Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

Three months and ten days for me

Relocated with work - asked them if they would move me to London and then they told me there was a position out here. I thought "why not?"...and here I am.

Loving it so far! And....I even think the people are great! All my colleagues are Swiss and they have been so welcoming, friendly and helpful, and have really helped with the settling in.

Not sure how long I'll stay but if or when I move on, I don't think it'll be back to the UK.

You have mentioned these a couple of times Lucy - what are the fines for (if you don't mind my asking)?
Nicola! Okay so this is what I mean;
Today we received the tailgating fine (separate from the policewoman claiming he tried to show his Australian licence). So the fine is 120-.. which is.. ugh.. hard because we dont have any money and we werent tailgating anyway (Luke thinks she pulled us over because we had BE plates in Zürich and she questioned us what we were doing there and where we were going - then once she found out we were Australian it went from being just a "routine check" to "oh you guys were tailgating")
But its not just the 120, its also 90- for some sort of city tax + 20- goddamn administrative fee

Seriously.. I would get on a plane right now if I could. It is so frustrating.

Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

I've been here since August 24th, so 5 months. And I'll be away again within 3 months. To be honest I'm quite looking forward to leaving not that Switzerland doesn't have its merits. I appreciate that I had the opportunity to live here, something that is very unlikely to present itself to me again, but for now I'm happy to return to normality and the English-speaking world (and yes, I do speak German!).

ok, since by the very nature of this forum most of us here are "foreigners" ... how long have you been here in the land of cheese, and if you care to share.. what brought you here ?

me?.. ten years to the day today !! ( and I've nevah looked back ) I arrived at Geneva airport to meet my fiance, now wife, and I suppose obviously she is what prompted my move here.

Gee she is from Hawaii .And you live in Geneva under French speaking people .Wat's wrong with you ??

Its 15 months for us now - my husband and I swapped jobs (me back to full time work and him to full time caring for our boys) and so far its been pretty good - had a few moments where I got home from work and he was ready to get on the next plane home, but so far so good. Except Lucy, agreed completely on the fines. I got a 290CHF for an 'illegal' u'turn which was across a section of road where there was a gap in the line in pouring rain - apparently there was no gap but last summer a patch in the road had been resurfaced and the line never repainted... anyhoo I was of course WRONG and copped the fine. Oh, and the police guy was so rude - even though I was trying to speak German, he was furious I didn't speak Swiss German!!! Husband is racking up one a month at least lol!

Funniest moment so far? My eldest son (5yrs) who LOVES tractors was spotting them as we were driving along the country side. 'mum, why are there so many john deers here?'. Me, looking everywhere and not seeing a tractor anywhere 'where son, are all the john deers?'

'right there, there's another one mum!'

'Ahh, my dear little guy, that is a sign warning you of deers jumping across the road.. the animal is a deer, not a john deer''

Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

It's hard to say. Time is relative. Living in Switzerland is like living in a time warp. Time passes more slowly here. I reckon that if I go back home, England will have moved forward 50 years whilst for me, Switzerland will only have moved forward 5 years.

That is horrendous - poor you. Given what you have just said I am absolutely amazed that I haven't been pulled as I drive a British and a French plated car alternately. Did you ask if they had specific evidence of your having been tailgating? Or, on second thoughts, I guess the whole thought of it was probably just too depressing for words. Seriously though, surely they have to provide some kind of evidence to present you with such a fine?
