Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

Almost 14 years. Where did the time go?

At the moment I have one foot here, one foot back home . Not sure how long I can keep up the balancing act.

Plaaaessseee...it's NOT "Swiss"...that's an adjective. It's Switzerland.
Think of it as a term of endearment. In the same way people fondly talk of Oz instead of Australia. etc

Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

2 and a half years. Came here with my Swiss husband. I am from around New Orleans, and do miss some of it but not the fear of getting shot. I am here for good. Better schools, beautiful land, nice people are just some of the reasons I love it here. Winter just about kills me though. I had only seen snow 3 times before I moved here.

Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

4 months, came for a job. Daughter happy in local school, enjoying my job, happy that the shops aren't open on a sunday, loving the lake and the mountains and happy that I found a pub in Lausanne that serves Guinness and shows the football. Not going back yet....

Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

2 months so far came just for the work experience and for an adventure, the place is amazing so close to nature but i'm find it realy hard to integrate myself and build a social life, people seem stiff and closed to themselves maybe i see it that way because i'm from malta where everyone stops talking to you even if they dont know you i'm looking to spend more time here i think i will adjust a way or another !!

I'd like to look at this from another viewpoint. Switzerland asking what it did before I showed up...?

Will be 10 years in Feb. Can't believe how fast it's gone already. Gave up my job to come over with husbands new job. Have loved and still love Switzerland and its little foibles.

Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

Been here 4 years. Had many ups and downs during this time, but always felt that this was the place I belong - It's my home and I love it.
No plans to ever return to the UK permanently, but may head to the sun when I become old an arthritic

Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

I am here since May. 6 Months.
Because i am from Portugal i feel wonderful.
I have met Vietnam, East Europe (Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic), Swiss people and lot more.

But the wonderful comes from being in a different culture with all shocks.
But also for the financial way.

When i am bored or no weekend plans, i can spend 400 chf going to Portugal in a weekend and have a hell of a weekend.

Last weekend, 4 ppl, a hell of dinner (wine, salad, for me 400g of real beef, deserts, jiropiga for 30 euros).

What a wonderful time i have been living.

Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

Been here since April 2008. Living as expats and we may leave beautiful Switzerland during 2012. I am happy being here and has integrated well with the neighbours and locals, the life style and the area, we live in, yet I don't feel at home (and neither do my husband despite all the good things CH has to offer).

Our Swiss neighbours even tried to talk us into staying here. We help each other, get apples from one neighbours apple tree, share parking spaces when needed etc. and we have been to barbeques and coffes at their houses, so we really have felt welcomed and embraced by them

As the years go by it has just become more and more urgent to me to feel at home and get rid of this restless feeling and temporary conditions we live under - no matter how fortunate we are living the way we do.

I was in doubt whether to write this as it so easily can be read as lack of gratitude from my side. I am grateful to CH, the people here as to my life and all the experiences and travels we get to do. I have just reached a point now where it has become urgent for me to settle down somewhere, grow roots and this will most likely not be CH.

But I am grateful towards CH, all the nice people we know here , I do well in German and understand more and more of the Swiss German (i.e. listen to the news in the car helped a lot). Truly CH has been such a good experience all in all. I just can't help my feeling of not belonging here and neither can my husband, so as said we will probably be leaving sometime during next year. Where to is however unclear, but that is another chapter...

Interesting thread!

Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

Be careful. "Home", whereever that may be, doesn't sit still and wait for you to return. After about 5 years here, the "place I came from" changed radically, friends moved away, got married...made new lives for themselves.

I used to travel back a couple times a year for work. Often enough that I started to take for granted calling any of my friends in advance...just showing up impromptu worked fine. I always got a great reception.

Then the day came, I was finished with work (sales conference) on a Friday, pulled out my phone to arrange the weekend, and suddenly realizing that there was no one there anymore. They had all moved away.

What a strange feeling to be in a place so familiar, a place I grew up in, but no one was there. It was like a neutron bomb...all the familiar places buildings were there, but not a soul to talk to.

Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

I think that Switzerland is home for me now. I've been away from Australia for 14 years now - I'm very much a tourist when I go back. It's still fun to visit my old home though.
