Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

I came here 17 months ago, to be closer to my family, and with the idea of being temporary.

Then I decided to stay. I enjoyed being back in Europe. I went through all the "phases" - I love the place, I hate the place, etc. Many highs and lows.

Every single time (and there have been quite a few, to be honest) I seriously thought to myself "That's it, I am out of here!" something positive happened: a kind word, a salary raise, a chance to help my family, a local friend just calling up for spontaneous drinks, a small achievement in German, a sunny day, meeting someone special.

So I stopped thinking about whether I should stay or I should go. The question lingers in the back of my mind, but I'm pretending it's not really there. Instead, I try to do the best I can every day, and...go out for lunch!

Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

It will be close to 3.5 years for us. First we lived in Geneva and in 2010 we moved to Zurich. I was happy here for almost 2 years and still have my ups and downs every so often. But now I feel more at home here than I did before. What worries me is if I will ever fully assimilate if we stay here or will I be always a part of the expat community here(?)

"When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it." - Paulo Coelho

Came to be with the man I love, then got a job offer before I moved here. We've been talking about moving out of this cold land and start our lives together somewhere new, last month we both got job offers in China, seems like we're moving to Asia in July 2012.

Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

5 months. leaving aside the language differences, feels pretty much like home in the US Midwest. which, leaving aside the winter weather, is intended as a compliment

Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

3 months: enjoying everything, learning the cultural differences and adapting to the diet of pretzel from breakfast to dinner that i love!

Moved because of job. First to Zurich and soon to Schaffhausen.

Stay as long as needed!

Re: How long have you been here in Switzerland?

I've been here almost five years. My husband has lived here for twelve, we spent years flying between Switzerland and the UK, I was still working full time. I would visit here once a month and hubby went back to England once a month.
Eventually I had a three month career break and three years later a six month one and we spent all the time together in Switzerland. We realised we were crazy to spend so much time apart, so I left my job, we rented out the house in England, and here I am!

He means the people. No one from the midwest would ever confuse the Swiss landscape with anywhere in the central US or for any other part of the US for that matter.

I grew up in the Midwest. So I thought that Adirondacks, Catskills and the Rockies were the best until I moved here for a few years. Now I think I might consider buying a little villa in CH or F. We'll see...

I find the people here more like New Englanders: everyone keeps to themself, might start talking to your neighbors after 10-20 years, etc., just like home!

7 months: still trying to get used to shared laundry, no shopping on Sundays, anti client oriented approach everywhere, bloody billag tax, etc
Moved her because of interesting job offer and just simple curiosity.

You have a point. When I lived in Switzerland I was asked if I was from the midwest US. The reason was that I would stop and help people who were needing pushing out of snow banks and jump starts or what have you. Most times I would be asked where I was from. When I would ask why, they would say, because I was offering to help.

I once watched a couple looking for help from passers by until I walked by in the parking lot with will talking to my daughter. Once they heard me they approached me and asked if I could assist them.
