Accident due to Englishman Driving in the Left Lane

Quote:

An beiden Autos entstand Totalschaden.

Einen der Verletzten flog ein Rega-Helikopter ins Kantonsspital in Chur, die anderen drei wurden mit einer Ambulanz ins Spital in Savognin gebracht.

They should not only reduce number of permits but driver's licences too...

On a serious note though, it happens. First time I drove here a while ago I caught myself driving on the left lane as I would normally do back in South Africa. I just slapped my cheek and was mortified when I realized what a fool I was... Luckily there was no cars coming from opposite direction on a dual carriageway.

Re: Accident due to Englishman Driving in the Left Lane

Happened to me as well - only the sight of an oncoming 4x4 (suv for those across the pond) snapped me back into getting onto the right, on both counts, side of the road.

I've always wondered why it's so simple for an UK driving license to be exchanged for a Swiss one - no test, nothing.

Well it's about driving, just on the other side. I had to get used to this in Asia. You would think because the car is right hand drive you can't get confused, but you do. It took me a long time to get used to driving and I have to say that I was glad the car was automatic as I could never shift with my left hand.

na. und?

If you're used to driving on the right, and go to a country where they drive on the left, you may find yourself on the wrong side too. I know I did, last time I was in the UK.

I always felt about it being a bit unfair that holders of licences from IR & UK can simply convert them without taking test whereas non-EU holders need to take those.

Re: Accident due to Englishman Driving in the Left Lane

OTOH, you've got all those European tourists - from East and West - going to the UK every year, having to drive on the other side of the road. And EU (and Swiss) citizens can also convert their licenses freely, should they choose to settle.

Most unfair.

In warm countries, they simply drive in the shade.

Yes, it was. The whole world drove on the left, then Europe changed overnight to driving on the right on 14 March 1941. The Americas and parts of Asia followed suit out of latent sympathy with Nazism which only shifted after Pearl Harbour. Afterwards, all the roads employees in the US went off to war, leaving no-one to change the roads back over to driving on the left, then everyone just forgot about it.

Isn't history fascinating?

Re: Accident due to Englishman Driving in the Left Lane

It is soooo easily done. In Germany I pulled out onto the left-hand side and wondered why there was a bloody idiot coming straight at me ... then I realised.

Prepare to feel exceptionally unfairly treated -- non-EU Australians, New Zealanders, Americans and Canajuns (among others) don't need to pass a test to get a licence in CH, either. And Aussies and Kiwis mostly drive on the left.

Re: Accident due to Englishman Driving in the Left Lane

I've had to swap several times in my life and I find that usually I forget when I am back "home" after having been abroad. So at the mo when driving in the UK I don't have a problem forgetting as there are so many pointers that you are "abroad". I usually forget when I am back in CH.

Likewise when I had been in Holland for a while, I forgot which side to drive on when I was back in the UK.

It usually happens in one of two places to me:
  1. on small roads where you have to drive in the middle - a car approaching in the opposite direction means you pull over to the wrong side
  2. coming off motorways when the slip road comes to a junction with two lanes (left and right) and you are turning left
Luckily this only happens rarely and usually within the first week of my return "home".

It's an affectionate term. The correct term is "Canadans", as in "Americans", but not a lot of people know that.

i am not sure if this is completely true. as I remember, Hitler only forced countries like Austrian, Czech, Hungary, etc. changing from left-drving to right. Many european countries were already driving on the right, originated from Napolean's France, including Germany. Also, US was also already driving on the right at that time.
