Places to visit around Geneva

Hi,

Me and my partner are really keen on moving to Geneva (or somewhere around there). He has an interview in Geneva this Friday, so we want to check out a few places on Saturday.

We have a hire car and are looking to see places in both Switzerland and the French boarder that are widely populated with english speaking expats. We were thinking places such as Nyon, Laussanne, Messery, Divonne les Bain and Thomon les Bains would be good to visit.

Can anyone recommend a day trip to see any other places that might fall under this category and fairly reasonable to live?

Thanks in advance
Kim

Hello!

I live in Nyon and can recommend it. Of course it's quieter than Geneva but it's nice live away from where you work!

Rgds,
Mark

Re: Places to visit around Geneva

Any of the Vaud lakeshore towns between Geneva and Montreux have large English speaking expat communities - ie Nyon, Rolle, Morges, Lausanne, Vevey and Montreux itself. Commute into Geneva from there is convenient because of good autoroute and rail links but the infrastructure struggles to cope with road and passenger traffic at peak commute times. It gets very congested. Problem is that in the Vaud lakeshore towns, accommodation is scarce due to high demand from international incomers and you pay a premium.

Most convenient towns in France for commuting to Geneva are in the Pays de Gex (Divonne side of the lake) but that's also reflected in prices. The Thônon/Evian side of the lake makes for more inconvenient commutes. There's no autoroute and train links are poor.

There's been some discussion about this before. I tried to search for the thread but couldn't find it.
Here's some feedback:

Re: Places to visit around Geneva

Thanks for all your advise.

We had a great time driving around the lake and getting a good idea of the different places. Started off in Messery side, where we bumped straight into 2 families in a shop that spoke English. Great sign we thought, had a little chat with them to try get some useful info on living situation, nice little town but a bit too quiet for us. Seemed great if you have a family and don't mind staying in most the time.

We thought Lausanne looked the most going on which we liked, Morges had a lovely Market, but both are a bit too far to commute every day if working in Geneva, doable, but would prefer to live closer if possible.

Nyon was so quiet when we turned up there, we literally only saw about 10 people in the whole place. Maybe we walked down the wrong part or its usually like that on a Saturday (maybe everyone was up the mountains)?? Nice place and close to Geneva but not sure if its for us.

Then we came across Divonne....well we loved this place! So pretty, more people around, loads of restaurants and even has its own little lake and beach. Think if we were to move we would choose here ideally. Has anyone got any useful info on Divonne? Are there many gyms around? Me and my boyfriend are very into our fitness so need one nearby and I also love the Les Mills classes, especially body combat. Does anyone know anywhere that does this class nearby?

Thanks again for your help,
Kim

Re: Places to visit around Geneva

I can't help toooo much about Divonne, altho mrs.G and I do our market shopping there most every saturday and it is also home to our favourite Indian restaurant in the area. ( karishma lounge )

gym? I'm sure there must be several but the one I know is the "val vital" thermal spa... swimming , steam , sauna and upstairs pretty much your standard gym, free weights and machines in various states of decay ( as per any gym in my experience )

Hi Kim,
Nyon is a great place to live. It is small but not too small.
Additionally, it has great connections to Geneva and Lausanne.

Re: Places to visit around Geneva

We spent tha first few weeks of our Swiss adventure staying at an apartment hotel in Divonne, waiting for our lease to start on our appartment! They have a pool and gym which non-residents could get membership for. Not sure on the details, but the hotel website is http://www.lavilladulac.com/ - may be worth a try?

I think you may have caught Nyon on an off day, because I've certainly found more going on there than Divonne, more shops, restaurants, poeple etc - the market in Divonne is lovely on a sunday morning though. We considered living there briefly, but felt it would be easier to start our Swiss adventure living in CH!

Good luck

Yeah I think we did, I heard lots of great things about Nyon. The transport links are way better there too, we are thinking this could be a better option now.

Re: Places to visit around Geneva

if you intend to drive to geneva every day from the lausanne side, you will need to be quite happy to sit in traffic for hours each day!

seems to be an accident every other day or just a huge volume of traffic coming in causing delays..

Re: Places to visit around Geneva

Yeah I think Lausanne would be too far away. My boyfriend intends to get the train or cycle to Geneva, does anyone know what it would be like commuting from st cruges area?
