Bad Hare Day, thanks so much for the recommendation for the film Pass It On. Have ordered it from Amazon (its really cheap!). It looks like a feel-good film - like this thread.

Re: How great are the Swiss?

Another story to help keep the faith in most of the community's inate helpfulness.

A friend who lived in a village about 10km out of town had been shopping and took the last bus home with quite an armful of packages. She didn't realise she left her handbag on the bus when she got off. Another passenger gave the handbag to the bus driver. The bus driver finished his route, drove back to her village around 10PM and returned the hand bag. This was the first she knew she'd left her handbag behing

If you won't bother to spell it correctly, the course is null and void, and of no effect.

Re: How great are the Swiss?

Ahhh so nice to find a positive sounding thread about the Swissies!

We are in the process of renovating our old house ....... and my bedroom had no radiator ..... at the beginning of the Winter. My son came home from the local pub .... lugging an oil heater ... given to him by a local old
Swiss guy, who overheard him telling some buddies his Mom had no radiator in her bedroom for the winter. How thoughtful and kind is THAT? He had travelled back to his farmhouse to fetch it during the conversation!

Re: How great are the Swiss?

What a wonderful thread - just reading these stories has made me smile.

I haven't moved to CH yet - we are doing at 2 stage move and I have just spent the last 3 days in Zurich getting the house we've rented set up for my husband so he can live there comfortably 5 days a week.

Anyway... over the last few weeks I've read some sad threads about the Swiss and their attitudes. I have to say my experience in the last few days has been great - we've met some really helpful and friendly people - and now this feeling has been backed up by reading the posts above.

Thank you all for sharing and spreading the happy vibe :-)

what a nice story and what a nice reaction on your part.
That is the way I experienced the English many moons ago. I went to GB as a 17 year old and in the 18 years of staying there I found the people very helpful and
now I ask
how nice are the English
or has it changed :-)
In reply to your question. Like you I'm not English but lived there for many years (17 in my case), and agree with you that the English can be lovely like that too. If you read LucyTotallyLost's wallet story, we had a very similar thing happen in England not so long ago... left wallet and phone on the car roof and drove off... of course they didn't fall off together but they got lost at different corners. The very very kind man who brought it all back to use said he first saw the phone but didn't bother stopping for it, but when he saw the wallet a few miles later (by then on the motorway) he figured what had happened. So not only did he stop on the motorway hard shoulder and ran across the motorway to rescue the wallet, he then drove back to get the phone from the roundabout in town AND then brought it all to our house - and all this when he'd driven off in the morning to go on holiday hundreds of miles away. So don't worry, there are still very nice people in England too !

If you just went by the complaints forum, the title of this thread should have been:

How great are the Swiss (except for landlords, neighbors, that creepy fecker on the tram, my kids teachers, ....)

Believe it or not, I lost my wallet twice in the New York City area in the past and had it returned to me with everything entact. There are good people everywhere, we just tend to hear alot more about the bad things. Good reason to have a thread like this. Lots of positive experiences in Switzerland also.

I have an equally hard time imagining this happening in the states - even cycling havens like Boulder, Co, or Seattle, the majority of drivers have a barely concealed contempt for cyclists.
It is sad. The other day I found a wallet on the floor at Borders (bookstore) and gave it to the manager. As soon as I did, a woman came to ask for her lost wallet. She got it back and the manager pointed at me for being the one that found it.
She did not thank me. Not a smile. Nothing.

Funny guy didn't even probably read the OP's post, otherwise he would have known that it was a 12 year old child, a girl child, who stopped by to offer help.

What a wonderful thread! Nothing really spectacular here, but...

When I asked Mrs Texaner whether she could remember anything especially kind a Swiss had done during her first visit to CH last year, she said no, but what actually stood out to her was what they did not do: she couldn't remember a single rude or unkind word or deed on the part of a Swiss; everybody was friendly and courteous (I'm truly delighted that her first visit went so well!).

It bears mentioning that when I announced to my Swiss friends and acquaintances that we were planning that visit, we were immediately invited to stay as long as we wanted at two different people's apartments one (who barely knew us) even voluntarily moved in with her daughter for several days so we could have her place to ourselves. When we thanked her with a Migros gift card, she was stunned, having neither expected nor desired anything in return for her hospitality.
Mrs.Texaner may be a bit less excited when the same people come crashing at your house for 6 months

Actually, they've already stayed with us but not for 6 months.

And I don't get the impression that any of them have much interest in visiting the US under current conditions (economy, TSA, etc), though it remains a few notches above Libya.

Woh woh woh...chill people. Why resort to this disparaging tone just because I have an opinion in this matter. And whats up with all the groans. Just because I wouldn't expect a hero's parade for helping a stranger, I just see it as human duty.

And as for the "helper" was seen to be around 12 yr old (although I have an alternative theory that she could be a midget) it just demonstrates correct upbringing.

Re: How great are the Swiss?

I guess there is a thread for cynicism and one for thankfulness. Feel free to start your own thread about taking kindness for granted. For all the others, I'd like to share one of my favourite "inspirations".
Quote:
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by
a healthy child, a garden patch
or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed
easier because you have lived;

This is to have succeeded.

Ohhh.. its from Girlosophy haha (I'm sure it was said by someone else, and then quoted in Girlsophy - but gosh I love that book ) as is this one;

I dont really have any wisdom or quotes. But I think the book "Girlosophy" is really sweet (I also don't think it is as lame as it may sound!) and one of my favourites from there is

NEVER:
  • mistake kindness for weakness
  • take advantage of another persons time or good will
  • stoop to conquer
  • think you'll get away with it
  • forget where you came from
  • give up
