There are several thousand threads on this forum in which cynicism, party-pooping and controversial-undergraddery are welcome.

This is not one of them.

Give it up.

Believe it or not, I lost my wallet twice in the New York City area in the past and had it returned to me with everything entact. There are good people everywhere, we just tend to hear alot more about the bad things. Good reason to have a thread like this. Lots of positive experiences in Switzerland also.

In reply to your question. Like you I'm not English but lived there for many years (17 in my case), and agree with you that the English can be lovely like that too. If you read LucyTotallyLost's wallet story, we had a very similar thing happen in England not so long ago... left wallet and phone on the car roof and drove off... of course they didn't fall off together but they got lost at different corners. The very very kind man who brought it all back to use said he first saw the phone but didn't bother stopping for it, but when he saw the wallet a few miles later (by then on the motorway) he figured what had happened. So not only did he stop on the motorway hard shoulder and ran across the motorway to rescue the wallet, he then drove back to get the phone from the roundabout in town AND then brought it all to our house - and all this when he'd driven off in the morning to go on holiday hundreds of miles away. So don't worry, there are still very nice people in England too !
Yes its true, good things and nice people happen everywhere
I lost my wallet in Australia once (aren't I great) and had it returned
And yesterday a girl left her phone on the bus so I picked it up to give to the bus driver when I got off (I was in the back carriage of the bus) but she called while I was waiting so we arranged to meet and I gave it back - not blowing my own horn or anything, but I think most of us would do these nice things..

Its still nice to have a thread full of stories about them though

I think lost_inbroad and kulchandra should meet.

And it's clear that certain companies don't hire based on social skills...

ok so somebody stopped to help a damsel in distress, whoopty doo, isnt that the least you can expect from a good samaritan?
Yeah I understand what you mean.
Sometimes I don't get it either why it seems to be so exceptional that a Swiss helps out a "stranger". Personally, as a Swiss, it makes me feel very sad when I see this.

Perhaps there is something I haven't grasped yet ...

Sometimes it's nice, amongst all the grouching, bitching and moaning, to acknowledge that some things are good in this world, that Switzerland isn't really such a bad place, that Swiss people aren't all nit-picking, wet-laundry-dumping, nasty-note-leaving, clenched-buttock mince-muppets.

I don't see what's wrong with sharing positive experiences, and having just one thread, out of the several thousand IT-nerd-bitch threads that dominate the forum, that celebrates positive values.

Is that really such a fluffy and unwelcome notion?

Never claimed any of that. Never had any problem with the people in Swizerland since I've been here for a year.

Perhaps it's people like you who need to dramatize little "good deeds" in order to cover up your constant whining and complaining about this perfectly reasonable place.

Woh woh woh...chill people. Why resort to this disparaging tone just because I have an opinion in this matter. And whats up with all the groans. Just because I wouldn't expect a hero's parade for helping a stranger, I just see it as human duty.

And as for the "helper" was seen to be around 12 yr old (although I have an alternative theory that she could be a midget) it just demonstrates correct upbringing.
if you said that the first time, people would have decoded the message in a completely different way

Re: How great are the Swiss?

It is a shame that this thread has been hijacked and turned into, yet another, argumentative, nauseating thread.

So, to get it back on track, two weeks ago my husband's colleague was running late for work and was in a rush. She went flying out of her apartment and tripped on the icy stairs, fell hard and bumped her head.

Next thing she knew, she woke up in a hospital bed. Somewhere in Rolle, there are some really nice neighbors who found her, called the ambulance and got her to a hospital, all whilst she was out like a light.

If you are these nice people in Rolle who helped an unconscious English girl, thank you! She is fine now but she did have a bad concussion.

we all fundamentally agree but I can tell you that I've seen people who've fallen over be left alone by passers by and I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of times doors have been knowingly left to slam in my face (which surely is the most simple of considerations).

please let people be happy with experiences on this thread. If you don't like it then don't read it - I do agree that we expect better but let's leave it there.

OK?

Thanks.

In principle that is how I see it too and is exactly what I'm thinking. But don't push it now.
It's a forum where people share and wonder about the good and the bad and all the inbetween confusing stuff happening to them in Switzerland.

So now that you've made your point you can simply leave it there and move on, right?!!
