Nah, Geraldo Rivera stole them in 1986. They just didn't show that part on live TV.

Re: 1000 CHF notes... who has them?

In the old days (20 years ago or so), my employer paid 12th, 13th, and end of year bonus in cash, so I've had a few of those!

Tom

P.S. I was disappointed to find out that they were ants, and not cockroaches, on the old bills!

Re: 1000 CHF notes... who has them?

My coworker told me, he paid his Porsche in cash (had no time for a bank-tranfer and the seller wanted cash as quickly as possible). 60 or 70 large notes.

I assume, most private car-sales are handled that way.

I had ordered furniture in Germany and they expected cash-on-delivery. So I went to the bank and asked for something like 3500 Euro....
That was the only time I have ever seen 500 Euro notes.

And once, the guy in front of me wanted to by his cafe creme in the Migros Restaurant with a 1000 CHF note - but the women on the checkout refused it and sent him downstairs to the "information desk", where he could presumably have it exchanged for smaller notes.

AFAIK, in Germany you can't expect to be able to pay with 200 EURO notes at most gas stations (though that might change, with gas prices rising....).

Re: 1000 CHF notes... who has them?

reached into my pocket today and realized that, for the first time since we moved here, somebody had given me a 5 rappen piece. actually made me remember when my old man used to give me a nickel and tell me "not to spend it all in one place."

I won't be throwing any 1,000CHF notes at my kids, that's for sure.

Well, in "those" days, they were only worth $600 or so, now they are worth twice that!

well, that would confirm the organised crime aspect anyway.
But currency traders like the worthy Shakarchi family (I knew father and son, and as I whenever only an apprentice, arranged some good transportation deals for them, had their nice support) are NOT organised crime. While I might agree about the banks

Sure, I also got, for some years, the salary in cash, which meant 1000 CHF notes. Not very practical as you in reality had to go to a bank to get it changed for smaller notes

20 years ago the 1000.- was the "Ameisi"

An this will be the new one

But like this one much more (with the nice reference to the one Wolli has shown):

Re: 1000 CHF notes... who has them?

Just to steer away from the organised crime connotations I get countless Doozigers daily but as a casino employee I'm supposed to change them for chips. A lot are recycled between cashouts on one day and buy-ins the next from the same punters but quite often you get businessmen coming in with a stack. When I first got one on my first day I was expecting some security check, a call to surveillance or to the manager, but if the lady in the tea shop doesn't bat an eyelid taking one you can imagine the disinterest of my inspector when I looked at him for confirmation.
Ten years ago working in the UK we very rarely got Scottish £100 notes coming accross and they would get double, triple checked, calls to head office.

Approximately 60% of the entire value of all Swiss bank notes in circulation are made up of notes of 1'000 CHF denomination (http://www.snb.ch/en/iabout/cash/id/cash_circulation).

Since I never held a 1'000 CHF note in my hands, I was wondering who hoards these masses of 1'000 CHF notes.

Could not find any studies out there that show who keeps them... Is it organized crime gangs or is it the inflation fearing grandmother that keeps these notes?

Just curious to what your opinion would be on this....

Re: 1000 CHF notes... who has them?

When we first arrived there was a mix up with the deposit on the rented house. I agreed to withdraw the deposit and meet the land lady at the bank so we could open one of those deposit/ bank accounts. So I told the cashier how many thousand I needed and she just counted them out 1,000 2,000 3,000 .....

I left with a large sum of money and 5 notes.

Did a similar thing in the UK and for less than quarter the amount of money my wallet was busting my pockets were full (of 10s and 20s). Felt like anyone could see I was carrying lots of cash.

Slightly off topic the 1,000 franc note is dwarfed (at least in zeros) by the Zimbabwe money. Just back from there and for novelty value I purchased a 50 billion note. Only later realizing someone else got a 50 trillion note and there are 100 trillion notes in circulation. Need to count those zeros carefully.
