Slightly off topic the 1,000 franc note is dwarfed (at least in zeros) by the Zimbabwe money. Just back from there and for novelty value I purchased a 50 billion note. Only later realizing someone else got a 50 trillion note and there are 100 trillion notes in circulation. Need to count those zeros carefully.
Yup. Got myself about 20 quadrillions in these Zimbabwean bills :-) ... and always have one 100000000000000 note with me to give out as a tip or as a conversation starter

I just changed one today in Indonesia. 9,820,000 rupiah I got for it. I'll enjoy spending it much more too.

AFAIK, in Germany you can't expect to be able to pay with 200 EURO notes at most gas stations (though that might change, with gas prices rising....).
The 200 Euro note thing has nothing to do with handling change but with the scanners. In some stores, staff are expected to put notes of 50 Euros and larger under the scanner to check they're genuine, but the cheaper version of the scanner won't scan the 200 Euro note.

It happened to me in a supermarket once. The cashier had to call the manager who took the note to his office to scan it, because the one at the till wouldn't do it.

I have reasonably often seen old ladies in a Post Office paying their bills with these big notes.
As somebody said it is almost impossible to use $100 notes in USA although they are daily currency in Russia & other eastern europe countries.
I read somewhere a Jumbo size cargo aircraft flies into Moscow every day stuffed with these notes. One of the reasons the US$ will always be a reserve currency.
I've used 1000CHF bills in the past to ferry money around for rent and the like. I felt like a criminal.

This was a great day. Until I handed it all over to pay the deposit for my flat! Still, it will be nice when I get it back.

Such pretty money...

Geeky joke spotted. Not very cool ... the μFranc would be better.

I *think* I held one or two when I had to pay my deposit, too, but I really cannot remember. I want to forget that miserable day. So much money...

Re: 1000 CHF notes... who has them?

When I first came to Switzerland 26 years ago, credit cards, debit cards, and cheques were not regularly used. Cash was king. I paid for my first car (13,000 CHF) and my chalet rental for the season (9000 CHF) by taking wads of wonga to those concerned in my pocket. Its how things were done.

Once, I bought a swimsuit in Geneva old town, and handed over a 1000 CHF note. It wasnt a problem.

The other strange thing in those days was going to the bank. I had heard so much about Swiss banks, yet found them very primitive at a private level. Firstly, they used a typewriter to type out the transaction (in 1986!) and secondly, if you asked for your balance they would shout it over the counter. My bank card was, and still is, a cardboard non-laminated affair. I have laminated it myself, as requests to the bank (BCV) for a more modern version have failed.

I've used 1000CHF bills in the past to buy slaves and pay out my pimps, all that before breakfast. I'm an even more hard-core criminal than Adrian.

Re: 1000 CHF notes... who has them?

I got some from the bancomat the other day.

My employer used to pay my 12th, 13th, and bonus in cash at the end of the year using them.

Is that what the launderette costs these days?

And people have the nerve to complain about the laundry rota at home.

That's ingratitude for you

My 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th are normally payed out in kind. That's why I have so much gold bullion stacked in the basement and why i have so much trouble explaining to my wife what all those prostitutes are doing.
