Trouble expected in Zürich tonight?

Hi all,

New poster, so please be gentle...

So I'm working away for the man in my offices on Badenerstrasse this evening and suddenly the security guy comes in and insists on lowering the metal external blinds down. He says he has to do it in every room up to the second floor. He doesn't know why, just following orders....

So anyone out there know what's going on, is there a gang of crazed St. Patrick's day revellers out there?

Cheers,
WB

It's the angry EF villagers out hunting bizarre low-count posters. You should be seeing the torches about now.

Re: Trouble expected in Zürich tonight?

the football club Basel is playing against FC Zürich today in the new Letzigrundstadion
There usually are riots after and before a match starting at the station, HB. Not really the proper fans, but the hooligans who accompany such events.
Just think what the Policeforce costs to keep (try and keep) them in order

Roits? Hooligans? In Switzerland? Ha ha ha ha what do they do, flick their cig butts and spit on the floor? Drop chocolate bar wrappers? Don't make me laugh. The SSB will turn up and threaten to fine them for making the place look untidy, and they'll all look sheepish and trundle off home.

I've half a mind to go out, just to see it.

Roits in Zurich, that's a good one that is. Ha ha ha ha

And since when has Mick's night been known for voilence? They don't even do much fighting in Dublin or Liverpool, which are the two biggest Mick's nights I know outside Boston, and I'd say it was far more likely to turn voilent there than in Zurich. And still not likely at all. Sure, the Irish here aren't looking to fight you. Even if you're English. And definely not tonight; they'll be far too drunk for that

Roits in Zurich ha ha ha ha

I would say that the Football is probably the reason. It has been known for police to have running battles down Badernerstrasse, until they get bored with it all and start to spray tear gas like air freshener.

If you want to see some riots in Zürich then we're only just over a month away from the annual party that starts at Helvetia Platz on 1st May. If you've never seen it then it's worth a trip down, but if I were you I'd make sure that I stay well away from the action.

Re: Trouble expected in Zürich tonight?

Nothing listed on the Letzigrund website for tonight. Security are still buzzing around trying to get me to close the windows (!) so I don't reckon its footy

/paranoia/
could be new tactics by the powers-that-be to stop us leaving and keep working all night... naa, couldn't be that

Good point, just checked and the next match at Letzigrund seems to be on Sunday. Has the Athletics started yet? Those fans are the worst.

Then you have never taken the train thru Zug to Luzern or to Rapperswil before or after a hockey game. Especially Rapperswil where post game rioting is more about the event then anything else.

Actually it is not a good one. I believe the tight rules for everything here makes the kids go totally nuts on some occasions:
- 1. May: Pseudo left wing activists "demonstrate" on workers day and end up fighting with the police every year.
- Football hooligans. Go to youtube and you will find plenty of videos of them. They unfortunately not only drop chocolate bars, but sometimes throw burning fireworks into the "enemys" family sector of the stadium. In Basel they once stormed the field after the match and chased the FCZ players across the field. Really really sad.

I live pretty close to the place in this video and did not laugh at all:

Re: Trouble expected in Zürich tonight?

the police actions have nothing to do with a football game. Squatters had been occupying a house in the Kalkbreitestrasse for 7 years. The police convinced them to leave the building, which they apparently did without putting up resistance.

Balls, I've booked a flight out on the morning of may 1st. That's getting changed right now.

Hockey teams thats a laugh. What, is everyone in Switzerland a closet thug or something? Is someone else going to post about the cricket teams, or the tennis and badmington players? Mikey B's already posted about the althletics fans. Surely you're taking your name in vain? How come I've never seen or heard of this anywhere before? Are these the people all staring at you on the trains?

One of my neighbour's is in the local police and is responsible for one of the water canons. He basically tells the guys where to fire. I live in mortal fear that he will pick me for target practice.

I can imagine him laughing his sack off as I go tumbling down the pavement.
