Basel, Haircut for dad and son.. where?

Hi,

Language not such a biggy as son and mum speak the local lingo.

Cost would be a big factor but.. not to the point I have a begger giving us a trim.

Any recommendations? Place and cost would be great.

Re: Basel, Haircut for dad and son.. where?

I have heard good things about Barry who has been here in Basel for quite some time... I believe he has some costs outlined on his website (link contained within link).

Also, apparently there is a Canadian hair dresser near Cafe Ono to whom a couple of people I've spoken have gone and been happy. If I remember right they said it was across the street / a couple doors away but I've not been out that area myself since hearing of it so can not give better directions than that. (Sorry!)

Meanwhile, try searching a bit, I'm relatively sure some of the guys have pointed other guys in the direction of barber in town as well. (The "man's man" type barber shop with manly uhrah truck and girlie magazines on the table instead of Cosmo and Oprah type magazines.)

Re: Basel, Haircut for dad and son.. where?

Hi Peg A,

I did search the forum and visited Barry's lovely site. It states 70 ChF* for a Gentlemen's haircut. I'm neither a gentleman nor a banker.

*Time dependent, I'm sure that for just a cut it would be less

Perhaps I'll get a weed-whacker from the local hardware store.

Checking on your other lead, thanks.

Sorry CK, I hadn't meant to imply a "didn't ya search noob!" type attitude if it came across that way... more simply that to find the thread(s) I'm thinking of, it may take a bit more of an intensive search.

Alas, my Monday Morning Brain isn't providing me with any additional info to point you in the right direction.

Re: Basel, Haircut for dad and son.. where?

OCU, located here, has cuts for Fr.22, that is a wash and cut for short hair. I'm thinking its a splash of water with a 1 minute consultation (likely me pointing at a photo of David Tennant) and then a weed whacking.

Details:

Comments on cut and atmosphere to come after I get a cut. But from what I can google its a school for haircutting!! schnupperlehern

I go to:

Coiffeur Krivo, Erdikli

Feldbergstrasse 87
4057 Basel

Its a pretty spartan chop shop but you'll get change out of a 20.
Languages spoken, German and Kurdish.

If you don't mind crossing the border, I use Coiffeur Cathy. A man's cut is EUR19 with a shampoo, and I guess a child's cut would be about half of that.

The Site you link to looks like a list of those salons who take youngsters still at school to come for a 'Schnupperlehre', a couple of days (perhaps a week, I'm not sure of the ruling) to get to know the trade from the inside when they are still deciding on a career.
When they have tried a couple of jobs and make their decision, they can apply to a Hairdresser's Salon to do their 3 year Lehre (apprenticeship).

Salons often have fully qualified Hairdressers, someone in their 3rd year of learning, someone in their 2nd, someone in their 1st. The jobs entrusted to them are gauged to the level of knowledge and practice they already have. I'm pretty sure the Schnupperlehrling wouldn't be cutting anything. The 'Schnupperling' lad at the salon I went to recently, was putting towels round people's shoulders.

Hope this puts your mind at rest.

There is a hairdressers on Claraplatz called the Studio. Its next to the U.B.S bank and on the 1st floor. It is a training school but all students are fully supervised. I took one of my elderly clients and they did her hair lovely.Cut wash and blow dry CHF16.. I asked my Hubbys Sister,as her hair always looks really nice and i saw some really nice hair styles been done while i was waiting. They do expect a little tip though!..

Hi Cheesykiwi,

Love your hair style.. There is a sign in the hairdressers that said tips would be appreciated, as the students only get paid a small amount and the prices are very low compared with the average hairdressers. You dont need to make an appointment, you just walk in as their are alot of students and i did see some really nice cuts been done on men and women. Evrey cut is checked by a senior.......I also know of a good wig shop if it goes wrong!....only joking of course!...

Militärkaserne - they do it for free, the disadvantages include the lack of fashion consciousness (very short back & sides) and having to schlepp a gun with you.

At Fr 22 I was happy, the woman also managed to get my sons hair cut as well.. no small feet. Would recommend for a fifty haircut when in the center of old Basel.

I highly reccomend Aveda,
on Freistrasse. They are fantastic there.

Directions: walking up towards Bankvereine there's a street to the left just after Starbucks. (:

Make sure you ask for a student cutter,
they are just as good as the regular staff,
but a little cheaper!
(& they speak English)

Enjoy.

Re: Basel, Haircut for dad and son.. where?

I got my hair cut (man's hair cut) at Guisseppe salon for 22 Fr. Had to wait 10 minutes or so. The haircut took about 15 minutes and I was fairly satisfied as he used the scissors instead of the machine. I like old-school haircut
The barber was Italian but spoke some English.
It is near the intersection of Elsässerstrasse and Jungstrasse (Mulhausenstrasse stop on Tram 11).

I was there yeasterday, as a matter of fact. Got a cut for 13 Euro. I'd be more specific (maybe somebody else can help me out), but the name of the place escapes me. Basel, cross the border at Weil am Rhein, then head down the main road 'till you get to the end. There's a plaza there with a Rewe and an Aldi, among other stores. And just opposite them is a salon (might be called Essentials).

Good price, no appointment, and the girl there spoke english this time. I'm not too fussy 'bout my hair, and I know they need the help, but somehow, the 'schools' always make me a little uncomfortable. Closest I got to that was the time I let my wife practice on me and that was a big mistake. NEVER do that...

Anyway, just an idea for next time.
