Biggest COOP in Basel....??

hello all,

Please excuse me for asking a silly question, but could anyone advise where the bidggest COOP in Basel is?

We have one in Leitzipark in Zurich where I work, and it is a massive one. Has everything, inc. baby wear, etc....

The nearest one to me is Aeschenplatz in Basel, and that is a lot smaller in comparison....

There is a big Migros nearby, but some stuff you can't get there.....

Be grateful for any pointers if folks are aware -

Thanks in adv.

The largest one I can think of is in Clarastrasse (nr the Messe tower). I think Migros is the daddy in this town (M-Park, Claraplatz, Aeshenplatz etc..)

Does it have to be COOP? If it's bigger selection you are looking for, then I would recommend Geant Casino and Leclerc just across the border in Saint Louis. Or Marktkauf in Germany.

I've not been to the Coop over at Clarastrasse but I have been to the City Coop (Coop City?) over near... Marktplatz I think it is. (I *really* need to pay better attention when I'm wandering )

This one is multi-story with "drugstore" type things - perfume, non-rx sunglasses, hair care, make up, stationery and school supplies - on the entry-level. Head down to basement for groceries, head up to find clothing on 1st, housewares on 2nd, restaurant and toys on 3rd.

For the rest of us Baslers... is that "near" Marktplatz or is my memory really that lost?

Re: Biggest COOP in Basel....??

Clarastrasse then next biggest I've seen is Batteriestrasse in Bottmingen.

As noted by other posters Migros seems bigger around Basel, or head to Weil am Rhein.

Don't panic. Near Marktplatz is right. I think it's actually Hutgasse.

Coop also own Interdiscount and Pfauen, so I suppose you could argue one of those is the biggest Coop (though I don't think either stock brown sugar).

Re: Biggest COOP in Basel....??

Oberwil Coop is supposedly the largest around Basel, at least they advetise it as Coop Megastore. It does seem to have a better selection in most of the food and drink lines, less so on other items.
Still no where near the size of a typical UK or US supermarket of course.

Re: Biggest COOP in Basel....??

Sorry, duff info from the old ball and chain, while the existing Coop at Oberwil is a fair size, the new one opening next month looks huge by Swiss standards, see

I might have to give this a quick visit

I still find it fascinating everytime I shop to compare what is on the shelves and what I would have expected in the UK -

I still do it whenever we go on holiday as well ! Sounds slightly strange, but I am always amazed.....

Re: Biggest COOP in Basel....??

Me...just landed in Therwil and heard about this giant Coop. Can I walk from Therwil tram station? I know there is a little Coop nearer but thought the big one might be more of an adventure.

Thanks,
Pam

Yes you can walk from Therwil, probably about 10/15 mins. Next stop from Therwil on no 10 is Hüslimatt which is a bit nearer.

Re: Biggest COOP in Basel....??

Thanks for that tip, finally got there, and it's much easier to get off the tram at Huslimatt. Huge store, great wine selection.
