Ch-Ch-Changes - after the Smoking Ban

as someone who has seen smoking bans come in to place in Australia I am interested in how the bans work (or not) in Switzerland.

report back here with

- tales of compliance/non-compliance by owners,
- improved experiences in smoke free bars/restaurants,
- examples of where outdoor areas have now become smokers havens (maybe not today in the rain though)
- promotions from owners to maintain business
- any improvements in customer service (just kidding )

as a side comment, I am still surprised that SBB will continue to allow smoking on their platforms. I loath the smell of nicotine in the morning :-(

When is this assignment due?

I'm thrilled about it. I've got long hair so it should save on shampoo and conditioner. I can't sleep when I smell that cigarette smell on my hair - yuck.

Smoking ban - great !

At least you can now have a meal in a restaurant without fumes making you cough apart from spoiling your appetite.

So far so good but - try to fight your way into an office building where a crowd of smokers crowd the entrance. You’re lucky if you get through without choking.

Re: Ch-Ch-Changes - after the Smoking Ban

oh dear, derailed already,

i know most people will have opinions on the smoking ban or smoking in general - but please pop those in the other thread.

this thread is intended to discuss actual changes in business/consumer practises in response to the ban.

cheers

nic

Re: Ch-Ch-Changes - after the Smoking Ban

so, are there any policies in place restricting smoking in doorways being introduced?

in Oz, a 3 metre ban was in place at universities and government buildings. This limited, but did not completely solve the problem of smoke enterin g buildings

Re: Ch-Ch-Changes - after the Smoking Ban

I do agree. I`m a smoker myself and i`m happy to help a little by stepping outside the restaurant to smoke a little or i sit outside on the terrace, with this lovely weather.

At my place i got even smoking rules :P
I smoke only in the kitchen with the filter or windows open. This works perfectly as non smokers say they cant smell anything when they enter.

I can report that the Globus am Bellevue is really smoke free, even at the bar. My husband took our daughter out for cake yesterday and he enjoyed a glass of wine with his snack. No problems, no issues...Yea!

Re: Ch-Ch-Changes - after the Smoking Ban

Paddies was smoke free on Sunday but people were smoking in the doorway, so I guess there is no limit on how far away from a building people must be to smoke.
I saw a lot of smokers huddling under porches by the door to most bars, mainly because of the rain I reckon.

People still smoke in HB Zurich the meeting point on the top level had it's own smog bank on Sunday.

Re: Ch-Ch-Changes - after the Smoking Ban

Went out Friday night in Zurich, the first time since the ban. Obviously, no smoking at Mythos, where we ate, nor at Forum, where we went for drinks afterwards. You had to run a gauntlet of smokers to get in and out the door though. I did a quick news search on it and I can't find any mention of restricting smoking close to doorways - I suspect this is going to be something we'll have to live with...

If anything, I'd expect service in formerly smoky places to suffer. At Mythos, the servers kept popping out for a smoke break...

Re: Ch-Ch-Changes - after the Smoking Ban

I was out on friday too for the first time since the ban - it was very pleasant! as it was raining it was a bit annoying all the people huddled by the doorway smoking BUT i'd rather this than the former

Re: Ch-Ch-Changes - after the Smoking Ban

The Irish Shamrock pub down in Wollishofen is great post smoking ban. I didnt feel like I had to shower twice when I got home and my usual quizzing team mates who are non smokers definitely seemed much happier.

Am a smoker and was happy to step outside for a quick one or two. No problem at all

I have to agree, it's awesome to come home after a night out and not have your clother reeking of fags, it makes a huge difference to the amount of washing I have to do too. Also I find I now smoke much less when on a night out now that the convenience of just being able to whip out and smoke a fag has been taken away. I love the ban.
