Zurich vs. Basel... [which do you recommend?]

I am considering a new job in Basel but I have just arrived 3 month ago in Zurich and I am really starting to like the place. The job is pretty much the same but at a different company and at a better salary. My question is simple:
Which city is best and,
what consideration should I do before taking the decision?
Cheers

Re: Zurich vs. Basel...

Which city is better is like asking whether coffee is better than tea. It's a matter of taste. What do you like? Busier, more water (lake), mountains nearby, nightlife, prostitutes defecating in front yards? OK, Zurich, then.

Quiet, green, easy to get around, tumbleweeds blowing down the main street? Basel's for you.

Seriously, you need to look around both and see whether what you like is there in sufficient abundance. There's a whole lot to like about both cities (and they're only an hour apart).

You might like to have a look at income taxes in various areas of each city, by the way; depending on your income, this might be a significant factor. Rent may also sway you, although Basel is probably as expensive as Zurich in many areas ... but without the lake view.

Good luck!

Basel!

Basel!

Basel!

Seriously, all I know of Zürich is the airport really and the traffic getting to and from.

I've been to the Luzern area more often as my hubby's grandma had lived in the area and there are some areas around there that I really like.

Basel is pretty and a fairly quiet city. Hardly a thing heard aside from birdsong in the wee morning hours, same goes past about 11pm... Well, except for the week or so either side of certain holidays and then you hear people hooting in the street, having loud conversations as they walk home.

Oh yeah... and when Basel beats Zürich at soccer, it gets quite noisy then.

Zurich is not best but clearly better . It is a different question in regard to Geneva, which I regard as on the same level as Zurich.

Re: Zurich vs. Basel... [which do you recommend?]

Having lived in Basel and only visited Zurich, obviously I'm biased....

Zurich is bigger, more traffic, more people, but of course more shops, more nightlife, more to do generally. Has a lake, nearer to the mountains. Better airport for getting to places.

Basel is a bit countrified compared to Zurich, but has a lot going for it, it's certainly not dead but there's more of a sedate nightlife here I'd say. Main advantage of Basel is that you have France (cheap wine) and Germany (proper and cheaper meat) on your doorstep, so excursions abroad only take 5 minutes and that's a real bonus.

Same here in the opposite direction: Basel is for me merely a nuisance on the way to Germany.

I personally find Zurich not as urban as the average Zürcher claims it to be: It takes me a ten minute walk to the nearest forest where I could hike for hours and within five minutes by car or motorbike I am far enough out of the "city" to see the first cows on a field... so to the original poster: Take all the comments on the "big city" really only as relative compared to Basel... not on a global scale.

Re: Zurich vs. Basel... [which do you recommend?]

my two cents...I always say that the best thing about Zurich is it is easy to leave. Great airport and great train connections. I travel a lot, so Zurich is great. The city itself I find pretty boring, mediocre restaurants and very expensive for what you get. That being said, it is probably the best city experience in CH. And very close to beautiful lakes, mountains and countryside.

If we lived in Basel, I think one of the pluses would be living so close to France and Germany. The Alsace and Black Forest are great, one could shop and dine there every weekend.

If the money is better in Basel, I would go there. If you are good at your job, I am sure you could move at some point if you needed a change.

Good luck,

fduvall

Re: Zurich vs. Basel... [which do you recommend?]

If you are a single male, I'd say Basel would be your paradise.

If you are a single female, I'd go for the sex starved desert of Zurich. Just keep your hands off the guys with the letter B burned marked in their palm!!

Seriously though, Zurich has the nightlife, but I have never thought the city was friendly nor pretty enough to want to live there. Basel is very beautiful on the other hand, it is small but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. You can travel across the city on a bike, it's friendly and it has it's charm.

both are tiny, I wouldn't even use the term city as that would somehow put them into the same league as London, Berlin, or Barcelona..... maybe better to refer to them as villages or settlements

Having said that, Zurich probably has more advantages - its a bit bigger, has the lake, is closer to the mountains, has a larger airport, more going on in terms of nightlife, and probably the better job market (unless you're in pharma or chemicals). Overall, Zurich is a fairly decent place to live, if you can afford it.

Biggest advantage of Basel imho is the better weather. Basel gets far more hours of sunshine (especially in winter when Zurich is 100% overcast) and has fewer rainy days than Zurich.

Winterthur.

They're all great (small) cities ...you can't go wrong really.

Winterthur is booming ... Check it out. Close to Zürich and the airport ... yet friendlier. More for your money in rent, and everything you need (nightlife, shopping, entertainment, international or local schools). Wins each year in polls for lifestyle ...

Re: Zurich vs. Basel... [which do you recommend?]

I live in Basel. It is feasible to live in Germany or France if you work here, and many people do - commuting from cities as far away as Freiburg or Strasbourg as well as nearer communities such as Mulhouse or Lorrach. There are certain tax breaks and other benefits for cross-border workers too. You can also nip across the border to shop, much cheaper and much more imaginative food and consumables available in France and Germany. Basel literally spills into the neighbouring border towns of St Louis and Weill-am-Rhein - my first job in Basel meant that my quickest cycle route to work actually ran through France from Allschwil. Transport in Basel is exceptional, and transport from Basel is pretty good too with good train links and a reasonable airport.

It is not as lively as Zurich, but there is more to do than you would expect from a medium-sized city.

I think it depends what you want out of a city, but coming from NYC, Zurich is 10x better than any other city in Swissland. Even though it does not compare, at least you has the best heartbeat here in CH living in Z.

Re: Zurich vs. Basel... [which do you recommend?]

I've heard it said that there is more integration between Baslers and foreigners. Many Baslers refer to the rest of the confederation as "The Swiss". Taxes can vary considerably. For example, Binningen, which is right next to Baselstadt, has the second lowest taxes of Baselland - so don't just compare with the city.

Baseldeutsch is easy to understand than other dialects.

The best thing that comes from Zürich is the last train to Basel.

Considering Basel has beaten Zürich at every meeting for the last two years ( that's four meetings per year, excluding cup ties) I would hardly call that unexpected..
