Can I survive with this salary?

Hi everybody,

That's my first time writing to the forum and, as salaries have everything to do with Daily life, I create my question here.

The point is:

I've got a job offer to work in Bern for an UN agency.
The annual salary is 72.000 CHF 12 salaries
plus 50 % of health insurance of my family (me and my wife)
plus 500chf / month or so for her (while not working)
plus allocation.

As an UN employ I will not pay taxes, the only discount in my month salary is for the private pension.

Is that salary enough for me and my wife (no children)?

Many thanks

Yes. This is above the average wage in Switzerland.

Re: Can I survive with this salary?

Oh! No it is not above average at all!!

Even it not tax deductible, it is barely enough for one person living a normal Life!!

Rubbish. It is quite sufficient.

We're not all bankers here, you know. Some of us live in the real world.

Re: Can I survive with this salary?

Well I think my question has dividing some opinions here.

But give to all of you more info, we are very controlled financially and we don't have the habit to eat out very often here in my current country.

Our goal is to pay a maximum of 1500/1550 rent for month (not necessarily in Bern), have an ordinary car and so on.

I appreciate any more advices

Once again the thread has been taken over by "is this enough"? "oh no it isn't". "Oh yes it is".The perpetual EF Pantomime. Most Swiss families live on far less than this! regardless of all the many people that think gold oozes out of the peoples pores here.

You should be able to live a comfortable existence from the package you have described and the living condition expectations you list. The fact your salary is tax free is a further bonus, as is the health benefit/ monetary allowance for your wife.

You can pay that much in rent, you'll have to live outside town. You should shop at Aldi/Denner and you can save up to 1000 every month that way. Also you might consider not having a car. I'm chronically lazy and love driving and I still haven't bought a car - public transport really is good. All in all, you can live well within your wage, probably for 3k per month depending on entertainment (very expensive).

OP didn't ask if it was enough for a 'normal life' just enough to 'survive'. so yes, it's enough 'to survive'.

Re: Can I survive with this salary?

Seriously there are some tossers on here. 72K tax free is 6000/month

In no bodies farking wildest of wild dreams is this not enough to live with, even in Switzerland. You might not be dining out overpriced restuarants but you will be ok.

OMGoodness, you've been spying on my life!

OP:
Yes, you can "easily" live the life you describe on the salary and benefits you anticipate. Add in the grocery shopping style Economisto suggests (Aldi and Denner) and yes, you should even be able to put some away as well.

Re: Can I survive with this salary?

I'd be happy if I could earn 50-60K taxed, with no benefits or add-ons, health fund still to be paid and a flat of around the same rent as the OP mentioned. No car, no posh dining. So 72K sounds good to me.
