Can I survive with this salary?

Hi everybody,

That's my first time writing to the forum and, as salaries have everything to do with Daily life, I create my question here.

The point is:

I've got a job offer to work in Bern for an UN agency.
The annual salary is 72.000 CHF 12 salaries
plus 50 % of health insurance of my family (me and my wife)
plus 500chf / month or so for her (while not working)
plus allocation.

As an UN employ I will not pay taxes, the only discount in my month salary is for the private pension.

Is that salary enough for me and my wife (no children)?

Many thanks

Oh! No it is not above average at all!!

Even it not tax deductible, it is barely enough for one person living a normal Life!!

Rubbish. It is quite sufficient.

We're not all bankers here, you know. Some of us live in the real world.

OP didn't ask if it was enough for a 'normal life' just enough to 'survive'. so yes, it's enough 'to survive'.

Re: Can I survive with this salary?

Seriously there are some tossers on here. 72K tax free is 6000/month

In no bodies farking wildest of wild dreams is this not enough to live with, even in Switzerland. You might not be dining out overpriced restuarants but you will be ok.

Re: Can I survive with this salary?

do people with diplomatic status like UN pay also VAT?
If you buy a car, furnitures,....do they get the VAT refunded?
Beside that they don't pay tax on salary, if they get also VAT back...then they can live like Kings (as another poster once said).

Re: Can I survive with this salary?

Well i think that you can definitely get by on that wage. Swiss prices are generally a lot more expensive than in Germany or back at home in the UK (i notice every time i go back home and shop in Asda or Tesco and then come back here to Zürich and shop for similar items). Restaurants and eating/drinking out is also pretty expensive too here in CH.

The good thing is that there is so much to do here which doesn´t cost so much like walking, biking, days out with the family with picnics and the like. I think you just have to be sensible and maybe at some point look to other sources of income like hobbies or something that might give you a bit of extra cash to do these other things that cost a bit more.

I have to say that i love life out here in general and even if it is a little bit more expensive to live then the other positives far out weigh anything else!

Re: Can I survive with this salary?

If your salary is 6000CHF a month after everything the you could almost eat out 3-4 nights a week. Thats way more than my salary and we live quite comfortably

Unless you are working in the same industry with the same skill set, with the same experience and are both seeking work at the same time, I don't think the salary topic should be discussed between friends. It never goes down well - and someone is always left feeling inferior. I wouldn't tell my best friend that i've known for 12 years and I haven't even looked at my husband's pay slips from his new job. I've also met people who tell me how much they earn the first time we meet

A friend once told me their tax rate once, and I told them that i'd pretend not to hear that and made them aware that others can work our their salary from that. My colleagues are always discussing who gets how much and openly show their pay slips to each other. Is it just me who thinks that talking about salary should be kept private?

UN pays very well no matter what country you live in. They have their own scales to measure the standard of living...for diplomatic workers. So don't worry.
I have a friend doing phd here, who is paid half of what you get. But he manages to survive, his wife does not work and stays home. He does not join every forum party, and does eat out, but Switzerland is full of outdoor activities for which you dont necessarily have to pay.
