Mrs G and I thought when we moved to Mies ( tiny village just outside of Geneva ) we were in a peaceful and gentile countryside...
yet she woke up early monday to what she thought was gunfire... I told her to go back to sleep as it could only be fireworks but I found out a couple of days later that a gang had tried to steal a cash machine ( yes the entire machine ) from a bank just at the end of our street and when the police showed up... yes there was gunfire !!

Unfortunately breaking into banks, casinos and stealing cash machines have became a daily activity in Switzerland recently, everyday i read about a new incident

Yeah, the loud bangs from the guns are also foreign. Swiss bangs would be quieter.

and just FYI.. there was a police cruiser sitting at the end of the exit ramp of the motorway coming into Geneva last night (rt de lausanne ) and a police roadblock on the rt.Suisse just by the Mies roundabout.. I guess they are expecting the escaped would be crooks to drive by.

Funny you should say that as only last night my husband told me that shooting (as a sport) is permitted here, only because the sound of gunshot is considered too short to be constituted a sound!!!

Yeah, after they finally closed the Raifessen in Chavannes/Bogis Bossy after 3 live hold-ups, the crooks had to move on to new territory, but still close enough to French border for the getaway. Mies more or less meets the requirements. A bank machine in Signy was also recently destroyed. It is more or less a normal occurrence these days, esp. in the border zones.

I'd forgotten about that bank in Bogis Bossey... but really... to try to steal an entire bank machine out of a bank that is literally surrounded by apartments.. not the brightest of thieves there.
plus.. 7 thieves.. one teller machine.. how much cash could there be in a machine? ( most especially in a fairly low use machine )

Since you're hopping all over, Curley (which I like about you), I'd like to add that in the same newspaper there's a happy little report (of Tuesday morning 7th August 2018) of a retired man who withdrew Fr. 3'500 in cash, then went to buy plums, and inadvertently left his envelope lying there at the market stall. The honest market-seller took the money straight to the police, and the police informed the bank.

Once the man realised he'd left his money somewhere along the way, he rushed back to the bank… and they were able to tell him that his envelope was safely at the police station. He fetched it there, and then went to thank the market-seller and pay her a reward.

Well truthfully I have no recollection of such criminal affairs after so many years and I was only keen to reply to Grynch as we were fellow Mies ex residents. I can only postulate that it must of been Signy Centre as there's not really any other commerce there. And I can only guess that if was probably something I read in La Côte or heard through the neighborhood gossip at the time.
