Re: When is Baden not Baden? (that is the question) split from house to rent in Baden

There was briefly a Canton of Baden during the Helvetic Republic, but it was merged into Aargau fairly swiftly.

If you take the Gemeinde view of things, then Baden is quite small, probably smaller than Wettingen, but it is certainly the centre of gravity of the surrounding areas such as Nussbaumen, Turgi, Neuenhof, Wettingen etc.

I've had friends who've lived in Nussbaumen, and it seems a reasonable place to me, though if you work at Alstom or ABB, you might find it's a little bit too full of other Alstom/ABB folks, you don't necessarily want to run into work colleagues all the time. For the same reason, it's quite "international" (ie full of foriegners), but that can have its up sides (like your neighbours not going in for the full Swiss attitude to things like doing the laundry on a Sunday, or flushing the toilet after 10pm).

Places like Nussbaumen and Ennetbaden have long histories that are punctuated by events (and statements) where they quite deliberately, and quite definitively, state that they are not part of the bigger community nearby and have no interest in joining it. True, Baden currently wants to fuse with Neuenhof - but Wettingen, which might seem the more logical candidate for fusion, has a rather decided disinterest in doing the same.
I was once told that the origin of the name Ennetbaden was "Is not Baden", which if true is a statement in itself and goes back a long time.

Ennet (ännet) is an old word for "across from" , for instance "ennet am Ri" means on the other side of the Rhein

I live in Dietikon, they say the same thing but I am happy that I get a huge place for a decent price.
I live in Dietikon as well, and I'm more than happy here. Its in ZH, 20min by S-bahn to the city, nice forests, convenient shopping and especially on the bremgarten side its quiet, spacious, nature-rich and clean. Sure it has no lake and a few blemishes, but otherwise its like any other gemeinde. And my apartment is great...I wouldn't get such a good deal elsewhere.
