Job in Zug - where to live? Zug, Zurich or Luzern?

Hello!
I'm happy to say I have a new job in Zug starting mid August.
Now, I'm trying to discover where it would be better to live. I live in Basel since a year and a half.
I have been gathering some opinions and some people tell me that Zug is nicer for couples or families. That is has an international environment but that it might be a bit boring for a single person.
On the other hand, I'm not a very early person, I would prefer not to commute to long to get to work. I would say all together (trams, trains, etc) 45 minutes maximum.

I know Zurich is a big city and it's nice, but a bit far from Zug, specially if I would not find a room somewhere close the a train station.
Luzern... I don't really have much information about it. People say it's a lovely city but also small and not many things are going on.

I'm also looking to live with more people as I currently do in Basel, to live in a shared flat.

Considering these things, what would be your opinion?

Looking forward to get some input from you.

Regards,
Bruno

Re: Job in Zug - where to live? Zug, Zurich or Luzern?

if you are single its better to live in zurich as you would struggle to find enough things to do every weekend, most probably you will head to zurich on most of the weekends. There are 6 trains per hr during the peak hrs, the fastest to HB is only 20 min

Consider living in Thalwil, ZH or Wädenswil, ZH both with excellent rail, bus and boat connections about mid way between Zürich city and Zug Bhf.

Re: Job in Zug - where to live? Zug, Zurich or Luzern?

Just my two cents here: I would definitely pick Zurich over Zug. First of all, even if you don't live right next to the train station, it would still not be a huge commute. The ride to Zug from Zurich HB is not even a half an hour, and the trains run fairly often. In Zurich however, you get to be in a the biggest city which Switzerland has to offer, and living away from it you'd find yourself travelling there for all kinds of fun anyway. Zug is dead on weekends and although lovely, I would say it's in general just too quiet for a single, that I assume you are. Luzern is also nice, but it's not substantially closer to Zug, and it's away from everything else (major train hub, airport, etc.)

I have very much enjoyed living in Baar (nr Zug) for the last two years - but then my interests are mainly "outdoorsey". If I were single I would tend towards Zurich as well.

Re: Job in Zug - where to live? Zug, Zurich or Luzern?

Hello!

Thank you all for your answers. I appreciate them.
Nobody talks about Luzern, why is that? My current flatmates in Basel advise me to go Luzern. It is a 20 minutes ride by train to Zug and housing prices are much lower than in Zug. I wonder if that compensates the lower taxes of Zug

What do you say about this?
I would like to have some extra work activities, like german classes, maybe some theater group (never tried it), water sports like snorting or something else, who knows?

Let me know your opinion

Thanks,
Bruno

Re: Job in Zug - where to live? Zug, Zurich or Luzern?

Luzern would be my choice over Zug but I have to agree with Zurich being the better option. Stay away from Thalwil and Wadenswil as they offer pretty much the same as Zug (i.e. you're need to travel to do anything and hell is there really much difference in a ten minute train ride as opposed to twenty).

Luzern is great, lots of bars without the seediness of Zurich. Fairly international as well.. I like it but I also am not single and looking for 3am kebab runs.

Re: Job in Zug - where to live? Zug, Zurich or Luzern?

This forum is very Zurich orientated, just down to the sheer ammount of expats who live there, luzern is more laid back, prettier and more friendly. Tbh, when you see people bitching about switzerland here, it seems to me that they're just complaining about zurich.

I agree with Dr Alex.
I am in Unterageri; 25mn bus from Zug, 0mn to walks, 20mn to sky...
Baar has some nice spots and you have walk starting.
Direct train to Zurich is great, especially on the way back (late evening).

Re: Job in Zug - where to live? Zug, Zurich or Luzern?

tax is lower in zug but cost of living is higher so its swings and roundabouts. the tip to live in thalwil is a good one. on the other hand if it were me I'd live in zürich as its not far to zug by train. good luck woth your search

Re: Job in Zug - where to live? Zug, Zurich or Luzern?

We live in Zug near the train station and love it here, but as the town is made up of many couples/families, it suits us. I think it would be hard to find a shared flat here because it does not cater to singles.

Lucerne is nice but probably wouldn't have as many opportunities as Zurich for other activities (theatre groups?) From what I've seen, they seem to cater more to tourists there than to people living there, but I don't really know since I don't live there.

Zurich would probably have the most opportunities (housing, free time, etc) for you and the Express train between Zug and Zurich runs every half hour.

I was looking around those areas as well. It's well worth your money to rent a car and drive around to get a feel for the area. You'll also figure out the distances, roads and all that.

You need to find out more about Lucerne. One of my partner's colleagues told me he has to pass a German proficiency exam or complete about 100 hours of lessons within a year or two in order to continue living there.

Re: Job in Zug - where to live? Zug, Zurich or Luzern?

If you live in Basel I would take two days and go visit Lucerne, Zug and Zürich and get a feeling for the places. I personally don't like Zug very much - it feels cold and unpersonal to me, especially "downtown". I lived most of my life in Zürich and I think it's a great city, especially if you are young and want to go out, meet new people ect. There are also a lot of people living in shared apartments as living is pretty expensive (as is Zug). Now I live in Lucerne and I like it better - but it is a small city so not as much going on as in Zürich.
Living cost: apart from rent you have to consider health insurance and taxes. I found health insurance to be cheaper in Lucerne then Zürich which made up for the higher taxes. Zug as the lowest taxes but the rents are higher then in Lucerne, where the living costs are cheaper. In Zurich if you want to live "downtown" it will cost you, same for Zug. In Lucerne I still see apartments for rent right in the middle of town which are not that expensive - so probably less commute time then from Zurich.

That's a good one - I can't tell if you're trying to be amusing or if you got taken by it.

To be useful though, Zug is great unless you're single. If you're single, you want Zürich.
