Tattoos and Piercings in Switzerland

Hi,

I run the danger of being called on old fogey..and maybe I am but it amazes me how normal unusual piercings and tattoos have become in Switzerland. I have been here for many years and at first it was nose piercings and then when that became run of the mill just about everywhere is being pierced.

Also with tattoos at first it was small ones and now they seem to be getting larger and larger almost covering some people's whole lower leg.

With piercings if you don't like it any more you can just remove but with a tattoo it can often be for life.

What do people think, is it just fashion ? A form of rebelion ? What do you think drives it ...and when this seems boring what will be next fashion ?

For full disclosure I have no piercings or tattoos and can't imagine wanting either of them.

Have fun

Martin

Re: Tattoos and Piercings in Switzerland

I have one and love it. It says something about who you are, what you've done or like etc.
Each individual has their own reasons for getting a tattoo but as you mentioned, some are for fashion, to rebel etc. Take the George Clooney "From Dusk till Dawn" neck tattoo or Pam Anderson's "Barb Wire" tattoo. They helped influence a fashionable wave of tattoo's for better or for worse.

I am thinking of getting another in the near future in fact.

Piercings never appealed to me but the more extreme ones seem to have taken the place of tattoo's as years ago :heavily tattooed/pierced=scary person for some.

To me it's all good. Each to their own

I love tattoos and have a few small ones and will be getting a new one a bigger one very soon

i'm fascinated by piercing but only like it when done tastefully and in some areas of the body only, i will probably get one on my eyebrow at some point.

tattoos and piercing i find are still taboo unfortunately and people judge you before getting to know you, that's the downside for some, as far as i'm concerned i don't pay attention and don't mind or care, it's not the odd look i get on my tattoos that make me change who i am, i am who i am with or without tattoos am i a rebel? perhaps ... ha ha; i think tattoos are becoming more and more a fashion more than an artistic expression of oneself, sad but true.

personally i find getting tattoos to be very addictive and i have to refrain myself, i like them to be tasteful and i don't like full body tattoos at least not on my body

Re: Tattoos and Piercings in Switzerland

Old fogey...

Although I agree

Everyone has their own tastes, but I just don't connect with the need for piercing or tattoos.

The friends that I actually know (cf acquaintances) with tattoos are absolutely "normal" and as Kevlegs said they had their reasons for doing it, but I would never want to do one for myself.

The body piercing I find odd. Not in a "gross" way, just a "why?" way. The ears for normal stuff, I kinda of understand, but even those ear "holes" I start to struggle with... <shakes head in disbelief>

Every summer tattoos come out of hiding.

People get them when their skin and body is looking its best, then one day they look like this:

Re: Tattoos and Piercings in Switzerland

I have always been curious about tattoo's but have never been brave enough or inspired enough to go and get one.

Now I really want to have one done to acknowledge how important my daughter is in my life. I would love to have her name tattooed somewhere and as her name also has other meanings it wouldn't be a "mum" on the arm type of tattoo.

there is a guy here in Geneva.. I've seen him around town a few times.. he seems anglo-saxon in his features but that is all you could tell...every visible inch of him is tattoo'ed... his ear lobes are widened with some sort of plugs and... I only saw this for a moment but last time I saw him it seems he is having his lips widened (!?!?! ) la African ladies in old issues of National Geo.

freaky!!!

anyone else down here seen him?

I found that when I first had mine in Switzerland, I was stared at for it/them. As time went on, the staring directly at my arm diminished - except from little old ladies

Here in the UK, and back in the US, I find that people either ignore them or random people on the street tell me they like my tattoos.

I'm due for a couple of new ones, ah, cash would be a fine thing

i'm with ranga on this one - on young firm skin they look great - but on sagging flesh it is a bit of a downer...and it becomes green!

Re: Tattoos and Piercings in Switzerland

Everyone has tatoos and piercings now. I fell like Im being the individual by not getting anything done. All of my friends have tatoos..and all of them regreat or hate at least one of their tatoos. And personally I think most of them look just stupid..I understand their wanting to make a statement about just how "individual" they are..but maybe now people with tatoos are the new conformist? I think so..

I mean what does yellow hibiscus flowers really say about a person?? NOTHING!! just that you wasted $400 for a lame slag tag that looks like $hit because you put on some weight and now no one can tell what it is...just my opinion though

Yeah, but honestly how much better would this dude look without the tattoos? Inked or no sagging flesh is inevitable. I personally think he looks like a cute bada$$ gnome.

ok... I didn't want to have to resort to this.. but as you think the guy is cute...
care to comment?
That's just what I mean-- is it the tattoos you're objecting to, or the nekked grannies? If getting tattoos makes people more liable to walk around starkers way past their sell by date, that's a valid objection, but I don't think having the tattoos makes them look worse (maybe the tattoos themselves look worse, but so what?)...

I think something like this is pretty

Many cultures decorate their bodies, Mauris, many African tribes, Arab and Berber etc... it's nothing new.

ok.... each to their own I guess.. I'm just glad it's not me ( and that I didn't have to see nekkid grannie in the flesh... so to speak )

as for the tat's themselves... and obviously this is my personal opinion... I have nevah seen one that I would say... "hey I would like to have a copy of that on my wall!"

EDIT... and not that this matters at all.. but I worked in a bike ( bicycle ) shop for awhile and that was in the tat culture... after a particular spectacular crash on my bike I thought about having a tattoo done.... I even thought it was original ( chain ring over and around a scar on my leg ) unless I saw three others with the same tattoo... as Zoso commented above not getting a tattoo became more of a statement than getting one.

EDIT2... I've just been told that nekkid grannie was NSFW... my apologies to any that had to witness that.
