Parcel Tracking from Overseas

I have a parcel on it's way from Canada to Switzerland. The sender got a tracking number and the Canada post website confirms that it's left Canada (on July 1st). When I enter the tracking number in the Swiss Post website, it tells me to check with the sending country.

So it seems that the tracking number will only be good up to the border of the sending country. This seems like a bit of a scam. It's an international shipment, so shouldn't the tracking cover the whole journey ?!

Anyone else had any experience of this ?

Any ideas about how to find my stuff ?

Thanks.

Re: Parcel Tracking from Overseas

I wouldn't call it a scam. Same thing happens when shipping from Australia to CH .. I get tracking info up to the time it leaves Australian borders.

Can't beat tracking from commercial couriers like Fedex.

Track and Trace through the Swiss post only works for parcels posted in Switzerland. While the post from Canada is quite reliable, particularly if the sender affixed a customs sticker, if you wanted to track it door to door it would have to be sent by courier (DHL, UPS, Fedex).
Does it have any treats in it?

Re: Parcel Tracking from Overseas

you just have to wait and be patient. it depends what is posted. they might take longer when they want to charge you duty. i give up posting things out now as they charge tax on the other side too. so you paid tax to buy a present here, send it over to another country and the person receiving it gets wacked too. good excuse not to send presents again

I can only report my experience with articles posted in the UK, sent by Royal Mail to Switzerland.

Not all items bearing a tracking number are entered into the Swiss tracking system: thus Airsure items are tracked only to the point of export. But Recorded Delivery (in international postal law, "Recommandé", "Registered") items will be picked up by the Swiss postal authorities and delivery will appear on their tracking system. On occasion delivery is reported without the item ever showing as being held for Customs clearance.

Airsure (formerly "Swiftair") is not an IPU standard postal service which means it is offered only between countries parties to bilateral agreements. My recollection is that it is not available to Canada. The Royal Mail Web site is misleading in what it says about its tracking: http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/j...mediaId=400034

Not every item that bears a bar code and a tracking number needs to be signed for; registered items always do. (In the UK there is an "international Signed For" service: http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/j...mediaId=400035

But even items that are supposed to be signed for aren't always, out of Postie negligence or otherwise. Which means, in Switzerland, where the signature of the recipient is on a portable electronic device, that if they're not signed for the tracking system won't know they've been delivered.

This would probably indicate that it might be still in customs of the consignor country (CA) and has not yet been announced to the consignee country (CH)

It's unlikely that a "petit paquet" (a legal term for the IPU) or an envelope would be subjected to Customs inspection by the country of export in the absence of grounds for suspicion. Or a drug-sniffing dog's attention. The rule is that they go out on the first flight: a cause for friction in those countries where there is favouritism for the national flag carrier. In which case they often don't.

Currency controls and anti-terrorism law may trump all the usual "Rules". But having watched the TV series "Nothing To Declare" I know how Customs at the airport postal stations use X-rays.
