It depends if you like country or city living. From a city slicker's persepective, I'd say Lausanne. I live in Geneva and like it, but Lausanne is better when it comes to nightlife, etc. Housing should also be easier to find and less expensive than Geneva, I don't see how it can't be. Plus, it's a bit closer to the Alps. Not by much, but enough to matter. Honestly, the only thing I'd miss in Lausanne if I moved from Geneva would be the convenience of being a stone's throw away from France (for grocery shopping and the like).

And if you're studying, Lausanne is a much more fertile learning environment, with the universities having actual campuses.

All the other cities on the list worth mentioning are basically suburbs of Lausanne (Montreux, Vevey). Fribourg has the advantage of being a bilingual canton (if your kids are in school, they'll learn French and German equally well), but that's where it stops. Neuchatel is nice, but... I dunno how to put this diplomaticaly... something about that place just turns people simple-minded and kind of slow. I wouldn't live there out of fear of becoming like them.

close enuf to town ( GE ) to enjoy what little night life it has to offer and far enuf out so as to avoid the increasing noise and filth ( beggars , etc ... actually I'm thinking of a certain Cher song but I got in trouble last time I mentioned this particular ethnic group )

Lausanne, and then Geneva but only because my first choice of Zurich was not listed

For Lausanne

1) Excellent public transport connections
2) Cheaper housing
3) Education opportunities
4) Demonstrably more English speaking people - significant Aussie community
5) Better night life

Geneva, home town.

You can walk from side to side. The lake is great. Locals are said to be cold, but once you know us, you like us (I hope).

Near France with its cheaper shops and cinemas.

Two nice mountains for walking, pic-nics, astronomy...

International Airport for those who like to quickly visit other european towns (or go back home if you're european)

Nightlife is perhaps less interesting than Lausanne but it was enough for me until I was around 30.

Minus is it's quite expensive.

gotta go with lausanne. it big enough without being too big. geneva is a bit too international loses the local or swiss vibe. too expensive too. geneva tends to be a bit hotter and rainier than lausanne too.

both have about equal access to the mountain for ski or bike, but i like lausanne and the proximity to the valais over the haute savioe and chamonix. the haute savioe is not that interesting to me for skiing and chamonix is normally too crowded, too much competition for powder. that's my highest priority.

Well, if living in the Romandie, I would much prefer Geneva, among other considerations due to the "proximity" to the Maghrebine and Lebanese restaurants in the Paquis, as well as due to the relative proximity to the vineyards of the Bourgogne (Burgundy)

well, we all have our priorities.

and lausanne has a nice proximity to vineyards as well...

alright, I like the Lavaux region a lot, but also the Côte (particularily the Nyon area), and have the Vin Vaudois in high regard, but in the end prefer the Burgundy wines

even if right at present drinking one of my absolute favourites, a Guerrouane, from the Domaine Toulal of the Celliers de Meknes of 2009. I just yesterday bought the bottle at the Supermarkt Wollishofen , where one of the cashiers happens to be from Meknes -- may be a sheer coincidence of course but I doubt it ! For anyone interested, the sales price with CHF 6.90 is really nice .

My girlfriend is from Fribourg and I really love the city, it's so beautiful. If you want something smaller than Lausanne, it's definitely a good choice.

I'm not too sure about this. Most of the Fribourgeois I've come across are embarassingly pathetic in German (like most Romands, for that matter).

Very difficult question to answer, how can any city be universally hailed as being best for living?...All depends on what your needs/interests are

Some people will like Geneva and others who value a bit more of the life en Suisse will prefer cities/towns further away from Geneva...Some like villages, others need a big city feel like Lausanne...Some will want to be near the water or up in the Jura, I mean it's all pretty arbitrary to call anything best for living

If you want my opinion, all of the best towns are in Deutschschweiz.
