Thrift Shops?

Hey everyone.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a site that listed thrift shops and stuff around zurich? In the US goodwill and salvation army have websites w/ store listings, i dont know if there is anything similar for zurich.

i know of the brockenhaus thats by HB and then of a broki-land over by weststrasse, otherwise nothing specific.

just curious.

thanks!

Re: Thrift Shops?

www.auszweiterhand.ch/engl_overview.php

Salvation Army is "Heilsarmee" - and is also covered - just click "list" and you will have every second hand furniture store (Brockenhaus) and salvation army store in the canton of Zurich!

Have fun!

Re: Thrift Shops?

Hi!

They actually ARE called something different - they are called "Second Hand" shops - and here is a link :

http://www.directories.ch/index.aspx?language=en

write in "second hand shop" in the YELLOW PAGES SEARCH BY COMPANY space - and you will get 337 second hand clothes stores in all of Switzerland - but the filter on the left will give you the break down by area.

Happy hunting!
Diane

Re: Thrift Shops?

I just found a list...

I guess my next question will be does anyone patronize them and which one is good.

Thanks again.

They all are quite good, and that also includes the many non-SalvationArmy things with names like "....-Brockenhaus" and "Brocki". Also the place just beside the Migros in Schaffhauserstrasse/Seebacherplatz, Zürich-Seebach plus the other one at Schaffhauserstrasse/Freiestrasse Zch-Oerlikon are worth a visit.

Practically all of these places can be fairly packed on Saturdays, and if you see something you have to make your mind UP, as it may be gone half an hour later.

You'll have access to a "thank" button (among others) after you've reached 10 posts (and I think also been a member for 7 days).

Happy thrifting!

Re: Thrift Shops?

do a search for 'brocki' and 'brockenhaus' here on the forum and you'll find plenty of threads of discussion about places.

Personally, I can recommend max and Moritz in Witikon for kids stuff - it's tricky to find (the shop is literally *under* the garages behind the apartment)...but they have 100 square metres of second hand kids stuff, all good quality...and perfectly organised...the owner speaks English and is quite lovely...

Kinderkleiderbörse is the german word you need ;-)

Re: Thrift Shops?

I don't have a car and have TONS of stuff to sell or donate - stationary bike, armoire, bed slats, TONS of good clothes & shoes, lamps, chairs... and on and on.

Do any of these places do home pick-up?

THANK YOU!

A lot of them do - call one near you and ask - but there is no guarantee they will take everything (or indeed anything) you want to get rid of. With so many people coming and going all the time, I guess they can afford to be a bit picky (e.g. they will take massive old wood furniture but generally refuse Ikea stuff.)

Good luck!

Re: Thrift Shops?

Also, keep an eye out for the "Hol- und Bring-Tag" that many Gemeinden do once or twice a year. You can bring any good stuff you don't need, and take whatever you want, for free. Last time I went, I got a lovely fondue set, and a spare photo tripod. If you are willing to get there early and/or spend the day looking at what people bring, you can get great stuff there. Friends of mine got a Soda Club machine, an exercise rowing machine, a baby car seat, and a whole bunch of Eternit planters (which cost 40+ francs a piece new!).

I always try the "put it on the pavement with a "gratis" sign" first. Then if no-one has taken it by the evening, well, tis just my bad luck (and bad taste).

Then a notice up at the local Volg supermarket.

If that doesn`t work, then I know its probably going to cost me to get rid of it!

I have lovely childrens clothes and shoes, (and roller blades), hardly used, gathered together after washing and ironing and folding (roller blades just cleaned) ... and now am waiting to get up the courage to take it to the local second hand shop, and see if I can make some "Trinkgeld".......for the future.... hahaaaa .....
