Missing Parcel - help

I've ordered a book from the US.
USPS says:
Your item was processed through and left our JAMAICA, NY 11430 facility on
July 13, 2010. The item is currently in transit to the destination. No
further information is available for this item.

I spoke to the USPS but they were amazingly unhelpful. It has left there postal service and that is all they could tell me.

I've talked to my local post office here in Switzerland but they say they have no record of it.
Any ideas about who I can try to contact now?

Re: Missing Parcel - help

Contact the seller? Or wait. Or write it off and order another one?

This has happened to me - with a larger amount of goods - and the seller filed a complaint with USPS for the loss and re-shipped what I had ordered.

Having said that, I received the "lost" goods eventually - after a couple of months. They took a detour via Czech Republic.

EDIT: Actually, you could try contacting the tax authorities - Zollamt - I'd try Zurich, Geneva and Basle (in that order). But don't get your hopes up too high.

Re: Missing Parcel - help

I can sympathise, I try to avoid USPS as have had 3 packages mysteriously lost, the first was a big package I sent to my newborn nephew of lovely newborn clothes, the others random gifts for family in Ireland, funnily enough all through that same sorting facility in NYC. I tried tracing to no avail, assume that your package is at best lost in a large warehouse....

Re: Missing Parcel - help

Hmmm not good news.
Unfortunately the book is a first edition and therefore expensive and also rare.

I contacted the seller and he passed me the shipping info.
Will see if I can talk to the customs authorities Swiss side.

Re: Missing Parcel - help

I've generally had quite good luck with USPS, but it seems once the item leaves the country they are unable to give any tracking info.

I got a birthday card from my brother in the U.S. last year, he was very careful to send it out early enough that I would get it on time. It came ~2 months late, partially cut apart, with postal stamps added from Columbia . But it made it! I'm honestly surprised mail makes it anywhere much less on time.

Re:Missing Parcel - help

have you ordered this through amazon or an amazon seller? According to amazon rules, you should be sent a new book by now or have your money refunded. I've found that usps really isn't the most reliable out there.

Re: Missing Parcel - help

Any luck with your missing parcel?

Unfortunately I'm in the same boat again, having ordered a load of goods from the US (2 boxes). One shipment has been standing in Geneva customs for 4 days (apparently they were waiting for the second one to arrive). This is an express shipment, mind. Luckily I've been able to talk Swiss customs into delivering it after all.

The other box has taken a trip to the Netherlands (well, very similar isn't it - Switzerland vs Netherlands ).

Anyhow, after phoning and e-mailing around the world it seems the only suggestion that will get you anywhere is if the sender puts the pressure on USPS. As a recipient you have practically nothing to go on, because "you" were not the initiator of the shipment.

So - e-mail or call the seller three times a day until he does something about it - at least money back, I would suggest.

Good luck.

Re: Missing Parcel - help

In my years alternating shipping between Europe and the US I have had more than a couple stray shipments take the boat (that's economy postage, sometimes they mix things up).
Jamaica is where JFK is, so that would be strange. Unless they mean Kingston, Jamaica. That's a harbour.
Just trying to be helpful.

Your "newborn nephew" will get your parcel right in time for the next generation.
