Following on from the Ąwhere can I wear my tux threadď from a couple of months ago, I was wondering if there would be any interest in an EF Summer Ball next year (assuming we have a summer of course)? I searched and couldn't find any similar threads. Mods as it isn't officially an event can you leave the thread here please.

I think it would have to take place in or near Zurich, as thatís where the largest number of EFers abode and itís easy to get to from most parts of the country, on a Saturday evening.

At the moment I am just trying to gauge if there is enough interest and how much people would be prepared to pay for a ticket. I have some ideas for both numbers in my head, but would rather keep them to myself and see what the crowd has to say. If it seems like there is a good possibility of raising a reasonable budget in terms of heads and ticket price, I will start looking more seriously for venues/quotes etc and asking for people to join a committee to organise it. Iím not looking to make any money out of this, so all monies will be ploughed back into the event or potentially donated to a worthy cause of EFís choosing.

My initial thoughts regarding what would be included in the ticket price would be:
Welcome drink
Four course dinner (starter, main, dessert, cheese)
Half a bottle of wine per person on the table for dinner
Band/DJ

Entertainment throughout the evening could include dancing, a pledges auction/raffle for charity, perhaps a speaker and some other ideas I have. Again dependant upon budget and Swiss prices!

Initial thoughts for the venue are a hotel, so that people who wanted to come from afar could stay over, however this has its drawbacks Ė namely the cost of a hotel room in ZŁrich is outrageous and there could be issues with not using their catering/bar exclusively (see below).

If there is enough interest to go forward, I will of course be contacting some of the obvious suspects regarding supplying to the event. For the guys who could be interested but donít have a dinner suit/tuxedo and donít want to buy one especially for the event, I would try and organise a group discount on hiring them. Ladies it is an excuse for a new frock.

So would you be interested? If so how many guests would you anticipate bringing (if any) and how much would you be prepared to pay per head for a well organised event with good food/drink/entertainment?

i am in. and i could take with me some guest... great idea :)

No I didn't. I specifically asked twice that you keep the poll thread solely to voting and indicating the number of guests. Hence why you have been moved.

As Rich and others have said this and the other thread are about a potential summer ball, not a BBQ, not an open air rave and not an orgy. For reasons I have stated, I would like to organise a summer ball. If anyone wants to organise any of the above, start a thread on it and get organising :)

For my part and my post in that thread, it was NOT with intent to organize a bbq but rather to give some idea of "reality" for those who are not here on their million chf expat salaries.

Anyhow, I don't want to take your (truly, and I truly mean it) fantastic idea for a ball and turn it into an argument.

'Half a million ex-pat salaries'... melodrama much?

100 franks goes pretty fast on a normal night out, dinner and drinks, so I have no problem spending a little more than that for a nice ball. Maybe you can get some sponsors, e.g. the owners of EF? ;) Would be nice to get some of the google cash :) Editor Bob, where are you?

I completely agree, I've definitely spent 100chfs on a normal night out in Zurich before (maybe we are just alcholics ?) :o

The sponsorship idea is great, but I am struggling to come up with a list of companies that might want to offer to sponsorship.(For them to consider the idea I'd assume they would need to profit from the expat market) So if anyone has any ideas feel free to PM them to me...

Perhaps there is a local business that may subsidise the cheese board  ;)

100 chfs is definitely akin to what is spent on a night out- and it would be considered a special event...in terms of a whole evening/night - dinner, music, drinks- it's quite ok for price. although to fully enjoy ourselves, those of us who aren't in zurich have to pay hotel, travel, etc. again, we've had some nights of fun in zurich for that amount and it hasn't included all the bells and whistles-

i think the idea of calling in whatever resources that we have at hand (any efer's that can contribute knowledge, ideas, etc) is also a great idea- it's a motley bunch of people here and you never know who can give a hand with what- assuming of course they're good for their word ;)

anyway- i take my hat off to you- not an easy job to plan and take everyone's input into account. not much i can offer except a big mouth, dancing feet and a love of a good party- but if there's anything that can be done as plans get made just say the word...

A great idea... it does require lots of work to organizing! wow, who will advance the money to book a venue? that means that folks interested need to commit to the event.

Finding companies interested may be easier than you think though. You would need to put together a planning (find the venue, the concept, a general approach of menu and type of event, the entertainment). Then write it up as a business plan, and go to local stores, restaurants, hotels, maybe vinyards? proposing to print a invitation and a booklet that will be distributed at the event, including a reference/advertisment mentioning the sponsors. Another idea would be to make it into a charity ball - the Zurich Expat charity ball?, finding a cause to support (children, earthquake victims, cancer, whatever), and build around that.

It can be fun to do, actually it is - but it is some work... the planning, the discussions with sponsors...

Excellent idea !!!!
Charity begins here.
How about the Caritas, La Soupe Populaire, Fondation Thťodore for sick children in hospital, diverses associations supporting families with children with orphan diseases, cancer etc

Eyebeebe.... would really like to help with this lovely ball idea :)

There is a Swiss Children with Cancer charity - which I would nominate for being the charity of choice.

If we did that I might be organise one of their VIP ambassadors to attend :D

Let's make it a Cabaret ! Open stage, any member can do his or her little piece , be it a song, dance, guitar solo, comedy act , magician , human cannonball or whatever... No pressure to perform...

But I'm coming anyway...

Charity ball sounds nice, but maybe that will be a little too big for a normal person to organize?
The Cabaret sounds excellent though! :D

Re: EF Summer Ball 2011?

In case anyone hasn't seen it, I posted a poll here.
http://www.englishforum.ch/daily-lif...ll-ticket.html

As it stands approx 25 people have said they would attend at a price of CHF150 (or more). I don't see it being feasible on a CHF100 or less. So assuming all those people would actually convert into ticket sales, which will never happen and they all bring a partner, which will never happen, that is still only 50 people. I realise that there are other people who may come, but haven't voted, but there are also people who say yes now, buy won't be able to make it. With these numbers, I don't think the idea is viable either in terms of atmosphere or financially. I certainly don't think that people would stand any further increase in ticket price, to support a charity.

I have some thinking to do.

Re: EF Summer Ball 2011?

You're right for the charity question. We could make it simple.
People could make any contribution they wish, directly at the ball, and the amount could be sent to a specific charity.
No pressure or need to add the contribution into the price of the ticket

Nope. Unless you're looking to host and pay. And supply beer and KFC.
