Not as good as in CH!

We have had very close and wonderful Swiss friends for over 40 years, whom we cherish. But every so often, out they all come with comparisons that various commodities are definitely not as good as in Switzerland. Just recently, our bank manager, who cannot speak anything but SD, travelled with his brother and family to the US for 4 weeks. First comments upon returning was "the bread is awful there and so is the coffee". This is normal, and we have heard it many, many times before. It seems to be a Swiss trait to compare detrimentally a great number of commodities, food, beverages, transport etc. to the extent where one would imagine CH to be absolute paradise. Sure it's marvellous, superb in fact, but so are other parts/places of the world.

Are you saying it's not true - or you just don't like hearing the truth??

Those damn Swiss, they should behave like us Expats; we would never complain about anything at home being better than Switzerland.

Re: Not as good at in CH!

Dont see what the fuss is. Most people compare. True true, some more than others.
At times Ex-pats are the worst, when comparing Switzerland with their Home Country.

Re: Not as good at in CH!

It's fairly standard.

When someone goes somewhere different, eventually (after the new-shine has worn off), people will feel out of place as things are different, they will feel lost and uncomfortable. When they think of the things they are used to, the comfort returns. They are used to certain things and it makes them feel included, as a part of something, rather than a foreigner.

I had to teach myself to transpose aesthetic values going to and from the U.S.-Switzerland. Self imposed schizophrenia. Waffle House=corner bakery. That kind of thing..

Re: Not as good as in CH!

As does "swiss standard" after a few years.
Mind you they were probably right about bread and some of the coffee especially if they went to Starbucks!
Might have thought it had the "standard" as they are all over Switzerland...

Re: Not as good as in CH!

I prefer the British approach to such issues. Wherever they go, they will look for a "pub" that serves fish and chips and pasties or stick with Pringles and Cadbury's so no such comparisions with the local commodities needed.

Re: Not as good as in CH!

This sounds to be a little out of context.

Not that I would often stand up to defend the Swiss, but each and every one of us are guilty of comparing things to home, so I think this is more about the manner in which they compared things.

If (for example) they have just returned from the states and immediately complain about the American coffee, then that'd be pretty ordinary..... after all, they could have gone to bloody 'Starbucks' anywhere here to realise that.

If they return singing praises of things they saw and did.... but the coffee was sh1t, then I consider this to be OK. There are pro's and con's to all travel.

I can understand hearing the same repetition after 40 years would get a bit tiring, but feel free to remind them that the weather is better almost anywhere else on the planet, and just try to steer the conversation towards the positive aspects.

No country smells of roses

The coffee in Switzerland is nothing to rave about. Push a button, there you go. Luke warm half the time, I give it up a long time ago
Oh for a tasty flat white...

Are you trying to be funny? I mean funny like a clown...? Or funny, like in rolling around on the floor in side-splitting spasms? ((c) Goodfellas)
